Christian History Biography magazine--Richard Baxter and the English Puritans
January 22, 2015
An ecellent introduction to both the English Puritans and to Richard Baxter, a powerful voice and figure among the Puritans. Shunning labels he worked tirelessly to break down the barriers that divided Christians of his time into sects and denominations. The magazine is well worth the information if gives on him alone, but in opening to view the all to little known world of the Puritans, it is a treasure trove.
What made the biggest impression on me was the practice of Puritan fathers. After private worship/devotional reading, they would lead their children in worship/devotionsevery day. Employers were encouraged to provide athletic outlets during the workweek so Sunday could be a complete day of rest. These little anecdotal information bytes within the articles are invaluable for our modern application. How often we spend Saturday "getting something done", so that Sunday we can "do something fun.", yet end up tired? I appreciate how they prioritized Sabaath, although it seems Hebrews encourages us to find true rest in our spirit daily, in Christ, more than routine. Yet, I respect their routine, clearly it was focused on right priorities.
