Product Description

Burned out and exhausted, Kerri Weems discovered that keeping in step with the Holy Spirit, rather than the world's pressures, means being led, rather than driven. In Rhythms of Grace, Weems draws from her own story and Jesus's encouragement to rest as she helps readers ask:

  • How do both work and rest lead to wholeness?
  • How do I set boundaries in relationships and time?
  • Is my schedule a pacesetter or a Sabbath stealer?
  • How is rest connected with God's purpose for me?
  • What would a year of sacred rhythms look like?
  • Speaking to women who want to know God's peace but feel caught in busyness and fatigue, Weems gives readers the tools they need to establish sacred rhythms in their day. In the end, their schedules will reflect not worry and ambition but the true priorities of their hearts.

    Publisher's Description

Life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. These well-known words of wisdom remind us to pace ourselves in the journey of life so we reach the finish line with no regrets. Pacing yourself is not as easy as it sounds. Life tends to take on a pace of its own which when left unchecked, will drive us toward burnout and fatigue. We can easily become driven by care, worry, and ambition rather than led by the Holy Spirit. We may tend to think of burnout as a modern problem, but we can see that people in Jesus’ day felt their own kind of spiritual and emotional fatigue. Why else would Jesus have said these comforting words?

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly (Matt. 11:28-30; The Message).

Even though he spoke these words more than two millennia ago, Jesus’ call to rest and peace seem tailor-made to fit this generation.

Author Kerri Weems had let the pace and rhythm of her life get out of control. At first the consequences were only physical, but they quickly impacted her spiritual life. Since then, God has been teaching her to walk in time with him; he is teaching her to be led rather than driven. In this book, she opens up her life and shares this journey with the reader. God’s best for each of us is that we go the full distance of our race, and not just crawl exhausted across the finish line. God wants us to enjoy the race and cross the line with our heads held high, a smile on our faces, and our arms lifted in a double fist-punch!  Getting to that moment is all about learning the rhythms of grace and pacing ourselves for the long run.

It was so interesting reading this book during the time that I engaged in the BREATHE study by Priscilla Shirer. Rhythms of Grace, much like Shirer's study, spoke about a concept that I am very much learning to appreciate and very much aware that I have need of in my own life - rest. Actually, I think I would prefer to refer to it as breathing space.

This book did an amazing job of getting to the bare bones of things. I really liked how the author delved into the foundations of rhythm. She spoke so well on each front - Shalom, Sabbath, and Grace - that it made me consider my movement and timing and music choices of life. It made me more aware of just how busy and cluttered I have allowed my life to get. It also made me more cognizant of how important it is to include boundaries around my life, which will better enable me to hear God's voice via His word.

With beautifully inspiring words and encouraging thoughts, Weems presented a great work that has the power to influence many. I think readers will enjoy learning about tuning into God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. I also believe that they will respond favorably to the Scripture references, reflection questions, and reboot guide.

Kerri Weems does a phenomenal job in Rhythms of Grace taking the reader on a journey to finding the pace God has for them. As you read through the pages, I would recommend taking the time to digest and think about what was presented in each chapter, questions are provided to help you in this process. The book is divided into three sections, each in harmony with the other presenting tools and equipping the reader to be the person God has created you to be through balance and wholeness in your life. As you read through each chapter, freedom to be yourself is preached through the pages, we are each unique and created by God in that uniqueness. Weems presents practical tools for arriving at your own pace, a pace that is awash with grace.

I enjoyed and recommend Rhythms of Grace. It is a book that will adorn my bookcase and be reread in the years to come. The truths, stories, and suggestions presented connect with my past, my present and help give me courage for my future. A desire for my mindset to shift to avoid burnout, mindless wandering, overbooked scheduled and overwhelming unrealistic expectations on myself. This was a well timed book to read.

      Frazzled. Burnt-out.

      Distracted.

      Stretched thin. Weary.

None of those are pretty images, but they're sure vivid.

And who hasn't experienced a period of time when those words are your reality?

Sometimes stress comes with a season- new job, no job, holidays, college, illness- and it will pass in time.

But sometimes, your life will need restructuring to reclaim "shalom" as much as possible.

Kerri Weems begins this book by discussing that- "shalom."

This old Hebrew word fascinates me, because it hints at wholeness and healing through all of our lives.

It suggests everything being as it should be, moving to a rhythm of grace.

St. Paul compared life to a long distance run, where ground is gained by one-foot-in-front-of-the-other persistence. Each person needs a pace they can sustain without sacrificing their sanity or soul.

This book is a straight-talking, compassionate guide to setting your pace in all areas: relationships, family and home, work, your schedule, your health, and your spiritual vitality.

Kerri suggests we establish a cycle of rebooting, taking time to reflect on what's working for us and what's not. Then she encourages us to dream a little, imagining a future of priorities and purpose.

She reminds us that "We cannot conquer time, we can only sanctify and redeem it."

Especially now, with the holiday season coming, I think there will be many people wondering how they're going to "run the race" in 2015. They're tired, worn out, and burdened. They know they can't stop moving, so many people depend on them!

Perhaps this book would become a gentle guide for them. It would say "I know you can't stop running, but let's take a look at your pace. Let's reboot yours days, weeks, and months so that next year is less draining." If you need a last minute gift, you could certainly look at Rhythms of Grace.

The strength of Kerri Weems new book, "Rhythms of Grace: Discovering Gods Tempo for Your Life," is her gifted use of metaphor. When I got to the part where she explains how we often live our lives like playing a game of Tetris, suddenly everything became clear. The whole book is full of such eye-opening analogies to help readers understand her message and its value.

"Rhythms of Grace" is a book about keeping pace with Gods Spirit in order to fulfill your lifes purpose instead of living in response to the crises of life that leave you feeling exhausted and out of control. So many women struggle with this! This book shows them how to turn it around, how to live life at a sustainable pace while building something lasting and worthwhile.

The book is divided into three sections: The Foundations of Rhythm (Shalom, Sabbath, and Grace), Pace Setters and Peace Stealers (which help us to establish our priorities), and Set Your Rhythmand Keep It Going (practical, life applicationwhat to do). I found the first two sections most helpful but saw value in ideas from the third. A Reboot Guide in the back of the book gives more detailed instructions for establishing pace.

I highly recommend this book for small groups or for personal use. It is full of biblical wisdom, gentle encouragement, and useful ideas. It is a book I will read again!

I have been claiming the verse in The Message paraphrase of Matt. 11:28-30 on which this book and title is based upon. The author seems to know me! I can absolutely relate, and though I'm only a third of the way through the book, I have already connected and have underlined helpful thoughts and suggestions that will help me get into a better rhythm of grace each day. This is a simply put but profound book that I will refer to again and again.
