When your child reveals that he or she is attracted to the same sex, how you respond may have a lot to do with your faith. Doesn't the Bible say that's wrong? Will we have to leave our church? Worst of all, you may wonder, "Do I have to choose between my Christian faith and my child?"
Susan Cottrell is a mom who has been there and wants you to know that loving and accepting your gay child does not mean abandoning or even compromising your faith. This is not a book about the politics or morality of homosexuality. This is a book about how to respond with love and support during this vulnerable time for your child. With practical advice and heartfelt encouragement, Cottrell guides readers through the fear and uncertainty Christian parents of LGBTQ children often feel.
Susan Cottrell is the founder of FreedHearts, a ministry for families of LGBTQ individuals, and former vice president of PFLAG Austin. She is a speaker and author, who has been married for twenty-seven years and is the mother of five children, including a queer daughter and a lesbian daughter.
"This book will help any parent who is confused, hurt, afraid, angered, or surprised by their child's coming out. Writing with compassion, wit, and wisdom, Cottrell strikes the perfect balance between sharing her own story and offering gentle guidance so the reader can navigate their own. In an age where we are all adjusting to changing understandings of sexuality, this book will be invaluable to those who want fully to know and affirm all the children they love."--Cynthia L. Rigby, W. C. Brown Professor of Theology at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary
"I can't overstate the importance of this book as it fills the most critical gap in Christian parenting literature: parenting LGBTQ children. I can only imaging that had this book been written earlier, the world would be a little less broken and the church would be more equipped to love our children. This is a book I hope all Christian parents will read-- even the ones who don't think they need to." --Benjamin L. Corey, Author of Undiluted: Rediscovering the Radical Message of Jesus
djay1 Stars Out Of 5Mom I'm GayJanuary 13, 2017djayQuality: 1Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1This book does not accept God's assessment that homosexuality goes against his original design for human flourishing. It does not acknowledge the destructive effects of sin on the entire creation that required the completed redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ. It all but declares that God created homosexuals that way and to consider that perhaps 'straight was not God's plan for your child' who is telling you that he is gay. For heartbroken Christian parents and loved ones seeking to come to terms with being told by their child that they think they are gay or struggling with same sex attraction it tells them that God created their children that way. Passages of scripture that suggest God is not ok with homosexual behavior are described as 'clobber passages' and are said to be cultural artifax out of touch with today's reality since God may not change but our culture has and does as evidence by the acceptance of interracial and same sex marriages. This in spite of the fact that there is nothing in the Bible that speaks against interracial marriage and there is nothing in the Bible that is supportive of same sex relationship.
