Jacob WilsonAge: 25-34Gender: Male5 Stars Out Of 5Revelation is for you!March 31, 2019Jacob WilsonAge: 25-34Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Tim Chester's engagement with the Book of Revelation is as refreshing as it is detailed. He strips away a lot of the unnecessary clutter and arguments, and hones in on the message of Revelation. This book reads like an informed conversation with someone who cares deeply about your grasp of the content.
"The problem with Revelation is not understanding it (though of course many of its details are difficult to be sure about). The real challenge is knowing how to live it."
While the book of Revelation is full of imagery and symbolism, pictures pointing to historical events, and prophetic in nature, it's message is clear. While Chester doesn't answer every question one might have, he provides an excellent framework for the reader to begin wrestling with Revelation. He provides quick, but seasoned, reflections on various aspects of the text, and doesn't hesitate to jump into the weeds with the reader.
"Since we are faced with the threat and seductions of the world around us, John wants to recapture our imagination about how God is at work in the world."
The book of Revelation is often avoided for its ambiguity, but here is a clear-cut, faithful treatment of Scripture. I would recommend this to anyone dipping their feet in Revelation, to anyone leading a bible study on Revelation, or for pastors looking to connect with their congregation through this book.
"It's a call to turn from the idolatry and 'worship him who made heaven and earth' (14:6-7). It's a call to reject to seductions of the culture, to 'come out of her' whose judgment is sure (18:4). It's a call to overcome 'by the blood of the Lamb and the word of [our testimony]' (12:11). Because this testimony or witness is contested, the book of Revelation is also a call to endure. 'This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God's people,' we're told in 13:9-10 and 14:12-13. For some this may mean martyrdom; for all it means dying to self (12:11)."
