Publisher's Description

In Return to Joy, Bev DeSalvo shares her own story of healing from past pain to draw other women along a journey toward intimacy with their Savior. The road to healing is arduous and long. But when we bow our pain in worship, this broken road leads to the heart of God, where all masks are removed and divine comfort can be experienced.

On this journey, understanding the true nature of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit brings healing and restoration to all father, relational, and mother wounds. Learning to aggressively fight against Satan, who is devious but not creative, replaces his evil lies with the truth of God so that they no longer define the person. Recognizing that God is always “with me” leads to a place of rest where there is no fear of being rejected or abandoned. As a result of these new insights, the reader can finally return to joy and experience emotional and spiritual balance. Out of the overflow of intimate worship, God becomes their refuge, provider, and protector, enabling them to move toward others in forgiveness and true community.

Includes a ten-week Bible study.

Because we all need a little healing....

Wow! I don't know where to begin. I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. It grabbed my attention and held it, all through the 200+ pages and once complete left me thinking, 'that's it?' I wasn't ready for it to end. I will be going back to re read this book for sure. This book doubled as a bible study as well. At the end of each chapter were questions for reflection. A lot of questions, all separated so that if you wanted to use them for daily reflections you could. There were a lot of scripture references. This book was easy to relate to, even if you haven't experienced the same trials she has, we all need healing from time to time. I know a few people who would benefit from this book and I will be passing it along to them to read. This was a very deep book, full of many points of reflection. One quote that stood out to me, "If we aren't broken by the love of God, we cannot become vulnerable and love others from our hearts. We can't truly love without being wounded and hurt by someone. We cannot allow God's love to flow through us as long as we have our protective walls in place." I feel like I highlighted or underlined the entire book and wrote my own book in answering the questions as the bible study. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is hurting or confused.

On the back cover of Bev DeSalvos book, "Return to Joy," we read:

"Pain. Abuse. Neglect. Abandonment. These issues lie just under the surface of our lives. So we stuff the ache, paste on a smile, and make the forced march to church on Sunday."

If this is where you are, DeSalvo wants you to know that the road to healing awaits. The books tells her painful story and how she found her way onto the road of brokenness and into the arms of her Savior. And chapter by chapter shes left breadcrumbs so her readers can follow her there too.

The content of each chapter is invaluable, full of Scripture, easy to understand analogies, and personal experience. Following each chapter, however, is a five-day Bible study related to its content. Readers will want to purchase notebooks for answering deep questions and recording new insights.

Theyll also want to read the book again!

As a ten-week study, this book can be explored by an individual, with a friend or counselor, or in a small group. I enjoyed reading it on my own and highly recommend it to you! Tyndale House Publishers sent me a complimentary copy in exchange for this honest review.

Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting but leads to being able to find real joy.

Return to Joy: Finding Healing in the Arms of Your Savior is different than any other book I have read on this topic. The reason is the very personal approach the author takes in sharing the source of her wounds, her ability to share on the page in a way that allows the reader to visualize in their mind the scenes she describes, and she directs the reader to Gods word for answers to the healing process.

It is written in a way that anyone that has been wounded by another can relate to her brokenness regardless of the details surrounding their pain. As she shares her journey of brokenness you relate in a way that makes you say yes, thats exactly how I feel. She shares the good, the bad, and the ugly of what she was truly feeling through her personal journal entries in a way that every reader will feel like someone finally understands how they are feeling. As she opens the nooks and crannies of her heart to us we begin to see her path change as light overcomes the darkness. She begins to identify the strongholds in her life that are lies from the enemy and opens her heart to full capacity to her Abba allowing her to experience Him in a way she has never known.

I connected to the author through this book that made me feel like God took the tears shed through her healing process and gently poured them down on me as blessings as I seek my own healing.

    Return to Joy

First of all, I loved the cover of this book, and may have partially picked it for the balloons. But the rest of the pages didnt disappoint. The cover is an accurate picture of the hope found within. Bev DeSalvo shares her painful story, not merely to shock, but to point to the hope that is ours in Jesus for healing. Im so grateful for Bevs courage in speaking about her deep wounds, and through them, pointing the reader straight into Jesus arms. This is a book of wisdom and kindness, walking through the layers of forgiveness and darkness that come with real heart healing. (Also, each chapter ends with discussion questions, making this a great choice for a group study.) B+ for me.

Return to Joy - a must have book

Return to Joy is a powerful book! I was impressed by the authors ability to be so open and honest in telling about her experiences with childhood sexual abuse and how she learned to overcome the feelings of shame and guilt that often accompany such a tragic ordeal. The author, Bev DeSalvo, grew up in a home with an abusive father and an emotionally distant mother. From a very early age, she learned to cope by pretending everything was okay. Wearing masks became a part of her daily life and caused her to become immersed in gaining performance based acceptance. She did whatever necessary to keep the peace in her home and to avoid more painful situations. She did the best she could but it wasnt good enough and soon, Ms. DeSalvo was contemplating suicide. At the age of nineteen, Bev accepted Christ as her Savior when invited to attend a college outreach program. It was difficult for her to accept the unconditional love of Christ but it was exactly what her heart had been longing for all of her life. The author, after learning her identity in and through Christ, begins to understand and surmount the lies she believed throughout her childhood. As Bev combats those lies with the truth of Gods Word, she quickly learns to identify and refute those lies.

Return to Joy is a story of overcoming personal tragedy and replacing it with a life filled with joy and hope. Ms. DeSalvo allowed her readers to understand the abuse she suffered as she shared very personal details about her feelings and experiences. As she shared her own experiences, she followed with questions for the reader asking if he or she had suffered similar experiences. She offered practical faith based solutions and always pointed the reader to Christ. I enjoyed the Bible study following each chapter of the book. The questions were well thought out and helped counsel the reader to move past hurtful situations.

In the book, Ms. DeSalvo has a section entitled Where is God when bad things happen. Id like to share an excerpt from that section: Bev says, Ive had lots of people try to explain where God was when bad things happened to me. Some said He was in the room, weeping in the corner while I was being abused. That didnt bring comfort because that would mean that God is passive. Others argued that He was doing His best to protect me, but that the perpetrator wouldnt listen. Well, doing His best was not good enough for me. That would mean that He is impotent. I could never trust a God who is passive and weak. As I was on my knees in desperation one day, I heard Him speak into my heart. It wasnt an audible voice, but a miraculous Spirit to spirit encounter. As I listened with spiritual ears, He revealed Himself as the God of angel armies in the heavenly battle that I cant see. He isnt passively and impotently standing by, observing our pain and doing nothing. God is actively engaged in heavenly warfare, and electrifying power fills heaven and earth as He wages war against the forces of evil on our behalf The author overcame her abuse by learning to walk by faith and shared Scripture passages and details like this throughout the book.

I think this book would be a wonderful tool for Christian counselors or those working with victims of sexual abuse but could also be used for victims of any type of abuse. The goal of this book seems to be helping a person understand and walk in their identity in Christ. By understanding how to move past suffering and pain into fullness of joy, the victim can be truly set free.

The author's writing style is easy to understand and read. There is a familiarity in her writing that causes the reader to feel as if he/she is having a confidential conversation with dear friend. After having read the book, the reader will feel equipped to take on challenges of the past and trials of the future.

This book would make a wonderful gift. It is one I will recommend often to friends and family. I will also be adding this to my personal library of counseling materials. As a lay counselor for a large church, I often find myself using materials such as these to help my clients.

I would like to thank Tyndale House Publishers for giving me the opportunity to review Return to Joy. It was my honor and privilege to write this review although I was not encouraged in any way to give a positive review for the company. If you know anyone who has been sexually abused please share this book with them. It will bless them and help them move forward with their life.
