Publisher's Description

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:28

Women are overcommitted, overconnected, overburdened, and overwhelmed. Their lives are full, but oddly, their souls are empty. They are aching for a bold challenge—one that will bring rest to their longing souls. Rest Assured is for the daring women who truly want to disrupt their current patterns and see lasting change.

Divided into two parts, Rest Assured offers not just an intervention:

  • The Badge of Busyness
  • The Exhausting Pursuit of Happiness
  • Tethered Souls
  • Worried Sick

But also a recovery plan:

  • Prioritize the One Thing Needed: Time for God
  • Create Room to Breathe: Time for Solitude
  • Give Yourself a Break: Time for Leisure
  • Pay It Forward: Time for Others

If the soul is weary, it’s time for an intervention. Rest Assured is not a quick fix, but rather a bold challenge that aids women in identifying the negative patterns that prevent them from experiencing rest in their souls. Most importantly, it will give them the tools needed to break the cycle.

A "Rest Stop" challenge is included at the end of each chapter for use in Bible studies and book clubs. Bonus material includes a 30-Day Restitution Plan and 100 Ways to Give It a Rest.

Feeling Exhausted? This is for You

In a few weeks, I'm speaking at a women's retreat {SO excited about that!} and the planning committee from the church is studying a book in preparation for the retreat. They were kind enough to gift a copy to me, so I could read it too, and I just finished it this week. {I chose to read it nice and slow so I could absorb it well.} Oh my goodness. I think many exhausted women need the message of this book!

It's called Rest Assured: A Recovery Plan for Weary Souls and is written by Vicki Courtney. Any weary souls out there? Vicki admits in the introduction to the book that she had actually forgotten how to be still. It's how we live, isn't it? We're so busy that we legitimately forget how to be still, and our lives suddenly become void of rest and saturated with exhaustion and anxiety.

    The message of her book encourages women to relearn {or maybe learn for the first time!} what it means to be still and to rest. We're busy because that's all our world seems to find acceptable. And sometimes we're busy doing really good things, but they still sap us of everything we have and are and leave us vulnerable and cranky. {And if we're honest, not all that productive, because we're too tired to truly be productive.}

We fill our souls with stuff and things and activities, because we think those things will make us happy and fulfilled {and maybe even accepted?} but they just deplete us even more. We are enslaved to technology and work, taking it with us everywhere we go. And even though we have no time for anything or anyone, we make time to help God do HIS job, assuming responsibilities that are only His to hold.

Vicki's book helps the exhausted busy bees not only diagnose the reasons for their busyness, but actually make practical changes to find rest. To make time with the Lord a priority. To learn to say no. To create space in every day so there's actually room for rest and to embrace the unexpected. She offers permission to go against what everyone around us seems to demand so we can actually enjoy our lives and our God.

The book is convicting without being burdensome. Vicki doesn't beat around the bush {and she shouldn't}, but she offers hope and compassion in each chapter. And while you can easily read this book on your own, like I did, and get much good out of it, it's also formatted to be studied together with a group. There are questions and optional exercises at the end of each chapter, which you can work through on your own or with others!

If you're feeling the burn of busyness and aren't sure where to start in understanding what's wrong or how to fix it, I heartily suggest reading this book and applying Vicki's suggestions to your life! I offer my thanks to the planning team for so kindly sharing the book with me! It was helpful, not just in planning the retreat, but in helping me evaluate my own life and time management!

This is an inspiring book about rest. I love how honest and open Vickie is. I felt like she was sitting beside me having a conversation. I have been going through the dares and encouraging others to join me. I always need a reminder to slow down. This was it!

I will be honest and say I have not gotten to read much of this book.

However, I have read enough to tell you that I really like Vicki Courtney. She has such an authenticity to her writing. It definitely comes out like a friend giving you a good chat, not like a preacher yelling things at you, telling you what you have been doing wrong so long.

Rest Assured is a book acknowledging the restlessness that all people, but especially us ladies, feel.

Vicki takes you on a journey to finding that rest in the Lord and what it looks like. This book includes some questions that you might find helpful to reflect upon while you read as well as space to record your thoughts on them. These are called Rest Stops and I really like that because this is probably the most precious time of reading you will do, when you actually stop the doing and reflect. As least for me, this is very helpful.

Of course this book is packed with Scripture and stories and insights that Vicki has. It makes for a very enlightening book.

The only thing I would change is maybe the length of the chapters. They are a little wordy for my taste and can cause problems in getting through the book. However, that is just my personal preference/opinion. I prefer to have more chapters which are shorter in length as opposed to having a few chapters which are quite lengthy. Again, just a preference.

All in all, this is a great book for women and I would recommend.

Note: I received this book for the exchange of a review. All views expressed are mine.

When I chose this book, I was intrigued because of my love of simplicity but I had a feeling it might not apply to me. I'd cut back on many of my commitments and busy is just not a word I use to describe myself anymore when someone asks how I'm doing.

But I was wrong! This book spoke to me time and time again and convicted me of different areas that I'm not using my time well, that I'm not being as intentional in my life and living it as fully and peacefully as God might desire (intentional is my word for the year but more on that later!).

I love Vicki Courtney's conversational style of writing. She's relatable without trying too hard. She's also extremely authentic and I love that!

I thought this book would be geared towards the minivan mom running her kids to sports and gymnastics every night, but it actually applies to every woman in every season. She covers our perception of busyness (the 'badge' of honor we consider a full schedule), time spent on social media and other technology, and how worry can steal our time and peace. She then gives us a plan for recovery and living a life of joy and peace. She emphasizes the importance of time for God, time for solitude, and time for leisure.

I am highly impressed with this book and would recommend it. As a bonus, there's even a 30-day restoration guide in the back with tidbits to ponder, pray, or act. And on top of that, there's a list of 100 ways to find rest or leisure.

    Definitely five stars from me!

Are you weary? Do you feel like your To Do List is managing you instead of the other way around? Then this book is for you. Vicki Courtney invites women everywhere to toss the badge of busyness and find the rest we all so desperately need. In her frank and authentic style, Vicki shares her own journey of overcommitment and the havoc it wreaked on her soul and her life. In fact, she peels back the curtain and provides examples of situations that occurred even as she wrote the book and how she is becoming intentional about creating margin in her life. As someone who has recently stepped away from several of my own commitments to decrease the stress level in my life, I found this book to be encouraging and inspiring. This book can be read straight through, used for individual reflection, or studied in a small group setting. With its highly practical suggestions for implementing the concepts and suggestions, Rest Assured is a book to be read, reread, and put into practice. Preoder your copy today; you can Rest Assured that you won't regret it! Releasing in stores and online November 17.
