I like Turano's historical romance novels because the humor comes from funny situations that occur rather than laughing at the stupidity of the characters. This short story was a fail for me in that regard: Wilhelmina is an adult, not-slim woman. Yet she tries to hide under a chair at a dance and gets stuck. I couldn't imagine why any sane woman would think this would work and promptly lost all respect for her.

Then the hero--while promising he'd never put the heroine in a compromising position--promptly puts her in a compromising position. So he also promptly lost my respect. The story got better after that, back to what I'd expect from Turano. The hero did some very nice things for the heroine. Also, this story made me interested in reading Miss Permilia Griswold's story.

There was no sex or bad language. I wouldn't recommend this as your first Jen Turano story, but I'd still recommend it to her fans as it introduces the characters in the "Apart from the Crowd" series.

This was an enjoyable short story and quite humorous. Not your typical romance which made it unpredictable and more interesting. The downside to short stories is that you don't have the same connection with the characters.

If you've never had the pleasure of reading a Turano novel, this one of a good place to start. It is a free prequel to a new series and is a good example of Turano's entertaining writing style.

I usually find that romance novellas have feelings that develop too quickly. Turano has solved that problem by designing the plot as a reunion. Wilhelmina and Edgar had grown up the best of friends. Because of an embarrassing situation at her coming out ball, they haven't seen each other for years. When she sees him unexpectedly, she knows she has never stopped loving him. But doe she love her?

While restoring the romance is an enjoyable aspect of this novella, my favorite aspect of all of Turano's work is her humor. There are laugh out loud parts in this novella. In addition, the characters are well drawn and the dialog is snappy. There are a couple of moral lessons included too. All in all, an enjoyable read, setting us up for the full length novel soon to come.

    Great Introduction to New Series

Jen Turano launches her new Apart From the Crowd series with a novella set in New York City during the Gilded Age. This series takes a look at the women whose society debuts have bombed, but are still required to attend the various soirees held during the social season. These 'wallflowers' are seldom asked to dance, and so spend the time sitting in silence. Apparently, it's a rule: "Wallflowers did not converse with each other... ever." Well, ouch!

Although it's short, At Your Request is also sweet, and of Turano's usual standard. There's humor throughout, such as when Wilhelmina is so desperate to avoid Edgar that she has an unfortunate encounter with a chair. Turano has a charming writing style, her characters are delightful, and I can't wait to read Behind the Scenes.
