Publisher's Description

After her father lost the family's fortune, Wilhelmina was cast out of the fashionable set and banished to the wallflower section. Taking a position as a social secretary to help support her family, she's mostly come to terms with her new status. But when her old friend Edgar returns to New York society for the first time since she rejected his marriage proposal, she's newly ashamed at how far she's fallen--and how hastily she dismissed him years ago. Her strategy is to avoid a face-to-face encounter at all costs, but he seems to have other plans. Will Edgar take advantage of their now reversed positions and make her regret her refusal, or is there still hope for a friendship between them--or something more?

At Your Request is an e-only novella that gives an exciting introduction to Jen Turano's new Gilded Age historical romance series, Apart From the Crowd! Includes an extended excerpt of the first full-length novel in the series, Behind the Scenes.

At Your Request by Jen Turano is the introductory novella for her new series Apart from the Crowd. It is a quick read with the laugh out loud humor that I've come to expect from Jen's books. Can't wait to read the rest of the series and see what antics the characters get into!

First, the disclaimer. "I bought a copy of this book when it was offered free. All opinions are my own." That done, AT YOUR REQUEST is a novella (which at the time of this writing is still free) that begins Ms. Turano's new series Apart from the Crowd. I read (and reviewed) Behind the Scenes (the first book in the series) which follows after this and it is nice to see the iceskating incident which is referred to in Behind the Scenes actually written out in AT YOUR REQUEST.

I had to laugh at Wilhelmina's antics... crawling under a chair and getting stuck (at a ball!) and Edgar's equal misadventures (falling in the center of the pond, multiple times) and I loved the quick, quirky way their romance played out -- and it was even mostly believable that it could happen that way.

The language is still very formal and stilted, and I do wonder where the author came up with some of the names (I haven't looked them up to see if they are real yet and I probably won't) but they do add to the quirkiness of the tale.

If you love historical, regency style romance, you will love Jen Turano's new series, starting with AT YOUR REQUEST (a novella), followed by Behind the Scenes. I can't wait to read the rest in this series.

"Wilhelmina was not a lady who was comfortable with accepting the whole banished-to-the-fringes-of-society notion."

At Your Request is simply a delight! It's all the fancy historical tidbits of society mixed with quirky humor that I've come to expect of the author, Jen Turano. I love that the most funny thing that can happen will happen to our dear characters. I love that our main character, Wilhelmina have the longest name that I can't pronounce properly and I love that Edgar is just as easy to say as it is to fall for. (Though his last name is more comical than easy.) I love all the supporting characters, especially Mr. Rutherford and Miss Grisswold. Their encounters are just hilarious (quotes below)! I love that it's set in my home city, New York City. I love the historical details of places I know. I love how the plot is ridiculously understandable. I love that love and embarrassment can lead to further embarrassment, but it also clearly shows love loves all. I love that the humor makes me laugh out loud and turn a not so great day into a day I can laugh, and when one can laugh, all is well. That's what At Your Request is. A story and a start to a great day - and a great series.

"You haven't allowed me the honor of filling in a spot on your dance card."

"...I assure you, there's no need to dance with me."

    "There's every need..."

"You should assume nothing of the sort."

    "Hand it over."

I like Turano's historical romance novels because the humor comes from funny situations that occur rather than laughing at the stupidity of the characters. This short story was a fail for me in that regard: Wilhelmina is an adult, not-slim woman. Yet she tries to hide under a chair at a dance and gets stuck. I couldn't imagine why any sane woman would think this would work and promptly lost all respect for her.

Then the hero--while promising he'd never put the heroine in a compromising position--promptly puts her in a compromising position. So he also promptly lost my respect. The story got better after that, back to what I'd expect from Turano. The hero did some very nice things for the heroine. Also, this story made me interested in reading Miss Permilia Griswold's story.

There was no sex or bad language. I wouldn't recommend this as your first Jen Turano story, but I'd still recommend it to her fans as it introduces the characters in the "Apart from the Crowd" series.

This was an enjoyable short story and quite humorous. Not your typical romance which made it unpredictable and more interesting. The downside to short stories is that you don't have the same connection with the characters.
