Publisher's Description

Discover the Truth About
God’s Sovereignty
from the Bible’s Really Bad Girls.

Eight of the Bible’s most notorious females strut across the pages of Really Bad Girls of the Bible with troubles that still hit home in the twenty-first century.

The Medium of En Dor crossed over to the dark side. Jael stood up to a ruthless enemy. The Adulteress was caught between a rock and a hard place. Athaliah made a bid for power that ended badly. Bathsheba captured the wandering eye of a king. Herodias made a cruel request of her husband. Tamar exchanged her widow’s weeds for a harlot’s garb. And the Bleeding Woman had a serious health issue only a great physician could handle.

"Higgs does such a remarkable job telling their stories that many of the Good Book's ’bad girls’ become downright sympathetic.… Higgs is a refreshingly astute biblical commentator…(and) ably points readers to ’good girl’ tips they can apply from the Bible’s cautionary tales."
—Publishers Weekly

Really Bad Girls of the Bible
shines a spotlight on God’s sovereignty, demonstrating one life-changing truth: God rules the lives of those He loves with mercy, compassion, and hope.

Includes Discussion Questions and a Study Guide

A Novel Approach to Bible Study

Editorial Reviews

Praise for the Bad Girls of the Bible series

"Liz Curtis Higgs’s unique use of fiction combined with Scripture and modern application helped me see myself, my past, and my future in a whole new light. A stunning, awesome book."
—ROBIN LEE HATCHER author of Whispers from Yesterday

"In her creative, fun-loving way, Liz retells the stories of the Bible. She delivers a knock-out punch of conviction as she clearly illustrates the lessons of Scripture."
—LORNA DUECK former co-host of 100 Huntley Street

"The opening was a page-turner. I know that women are going to read this and look at these women of the Bible with fresh eyes."
—DEE BRESTIN author of The Friendships of Women

"This book is a ’good read’ directed straight at the ’bad girl’ in all of us."
—ELISAMORGAN president emerita, MOPS International

"With a skillful pen and engaging candor Liz paints pictures of modern situations, then uniquely parallels them with the Bible’s ’bad girls.’ She doesn’t condemn, but rather encourages and equips her readers to become godly women, regardless of the past."
—MARY HUNT author of Mary Hunt’s Debt-Proof Living

"Bad Girls is more than an entertaining romp through fascinating characters. It is a bona fide Bible study in which women (and men!) will see themselves revealed and restored through the matchless and amazing grace of God."
—ANGELA ELWELL HUNT author of The Immortal

"Liz had me from the first paragraph. I was continually amazed how skillfully she dressed the biblical characters in contemporary garments. She made the old stories live again. An exciting work."
—KALI SCHNIEDERS author of Truffles from Heaven

"Liz has brought a blended format of fiction, biblical commentary, and thought-provoking questions to each of these characters. I love the way Liz slips ’modern-day flesh’ on biblical truth."
—DARLENE HEPLER Church of the Open Door, Elyria, Ohio

"With great insight into the challenges faced by ten women who have gone before us, Liz analyzes the driving forces in women’s lives that can cause them to make bad decisions. Invite a group of friends to join you in discussing the issues presented in this book—your lives may be changed forever!"
—VICKY WAUTERLEK The Village Church of Barrington, Illinois

"I loved the down-to-earth realism. Instead of having an airbrushed, plastic feel, Bad Girls of the Bible jumps off the pages with fresh, relevant, and engaging applications."
—BECKY MOLTUMYR director of women’s ministries, Brookside Church, Omaha, Nebraska

Really Bad Girls of the Bible covers the stories of 8 less than perfect women of the bible. The women covered in this book are lesser known women of the bible. Liz Curtis Higgs has written another great book that teaches us about the women in the bible and gives us an in site into what their lives were like. The author starts each chapter with a modern day story that ties into the Bible time story. The author also witnesses to the reader by including bits and pieces of her life prior to becoming a Christian.

The women introduced in this book are the Medium of En Dor, Jael, The Adulteress, Athaliah, Bathsheba, Herodias, Tamar the Widow, and The Bleeding Woman. Many of these stories were familiar to me, but the way the author wrote their story, it felt like I was learning about them all over again. I love the story of Deborah that is written in Judges, Liz has brought out the character of Jael in this book. The strength and courage it must have taken her to kill Sisera, after he had fallen asleep, with a tent peg and a hammer. Liz has also shown a different side to the story of Bathsheba. What would you do, the man who has authority over your husband has commanded you to come to him. I really had never thought of Bathsheba's story like this. Another of my favorite stories of women of the old testament is that of Tamar. Having read the story many times, I now look at it differently. The author has pointed out the customs of the times and how Tamar was wronged by her husbands and father-in-law.

This is a great book to read to understand the women in the old testament. The book also includes a discussion and study guide that makes is a great choice to use for a bible study.

Nobody tells and brings out the truth of a Bible story quite like Liz Curtis Higgs, so I was really excited to get to read this updated version of one of her classic books. In "Really Bad Girls of the Bible," Higgs brings eight biblical women to life with humor, creativity, and compassion (for those who deserved it--not all of these bad girls did. A few were rotten to the core; Higgs shows readers why.)

Higgs starts each chapter with a contemporary version of the featured Bible story, helping readers see how the woman might have behaved in today's society. (I enjoyed trying to see how quickly I could figure out which bad girl's story she was telling.) Higgs followed the contemporary story with a phrase by phrase commentary of the Bible text, sharing her own insights and experience along with other commentator's notes. She closed each chapter with a list of practical lessons for readers to apply from each bad girl's life. Higgs finished the book with a personal note, a fun poem, discussion questions, and a study guide.

I recommend this book for personal or group study. The content is fun, but the insights are deep. Higgs' gift with words makes both the story and the lessons of each chapter memorable.

I thank Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers for sending me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for this honest review.

With a fresh take (but biblically grounded) in her best-selling book Bad Girls of the Bible Liz brought new life to eight infamous women in biblical history; and she does it again!

Liz presents the stories of the "bad girls" from the bible, by beginning each chapter with a wonderfully written fictional story on said women but based in modern times.

In doing so you get a fresh take on an "old" story; it also helps you better understand the situation.

After the fictional story is over, the author then breaks down the Biblical story; dissecting the story and showing you bits that you may have over looked. Finally at the end of each chapter there's a "what lessons can be learned from (insert bad girl name here)".

The book also contains a nice study guide in the back.

I love Liz Curtis Higgs books. They are always informative, biblically sound and wonderfully written. She makes scripture come to life with a very enjoyable read.

    Quick, fun, educational. 5 stars.

I received this book through Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
