Product Description

Wesley came to the conclusion that real Christians are those whose inward and outward lives have been transformed by the bountiful sanctifying grave of God-what he termed real Christianity, and this he strove for himself. Real Christianity, as Wesley understood it, embraces both works of piety and mercy, the personal and social. That is, it embraces, for example, working among the poor and forgotten, genuinely encountering the "other" as one of the more important means of growing in the love of God and neigbor. Accordingly, the book serves both as a fine, brief biography, but also as one which makes remarkable sense of Wesley's own spiritual journey.

Publisher's Description

A Real Christian: The Life of John Wesley fills a void in available books in Wesleyan studies by providing a brief, solid biography that focuses on Wesley himself. While exploring Wesley's ancestry, birth, death, and every major biographical and theological event between, Collins also explores the theme of John Wesley's spiritual growth and maturation.

Wesley came to the conclusion that real Christians are those whose inward (and outward) lives have been transformed by the bountiful sanctifying grace of God -- what he termed real Christianity--and this he strove to obtain for himself. Real Christianity, as Wesley understood it, embraces both works of piety and mercy, the person and the social.

This review was written for A Real Christian: The Life of John Wesley.
This volume is a very readable, very enlightening biography. Collins makes good use of Wesley's numerous letters and published works, and those of his contemporaries, to create a compelling and relevant history of his spiritual development. There are many revealing insights on Wesley's thought and character here, and a clear picture of Wesley the man. As a layperson, I appreciated Collin's easily readable style, and I highly recommend this book.
