Publisher's Description

The single greatest lesson parents teach their kids isn't anything they say--it's what they do. And while most parents would say they want to raise compassionate kids, they might be surprised to discover just how little they're actually modeling the behaviors they hope to pass on--qualities such as unconditional love, gentleness, forgiveness, patience, gratitude, humility, and more.

In this unique book, Sami Cone shows parents a new way to look at molding their children, one in which focusing on adding good behaviors and attitudes is more powerful than eliminating bad ones. Grounding her advice in Scripture--specifically the twelve characteristics found in Colossians 3:12-17--Cone offers plenty of stories from her own life to show these principles in action. And she offers practical things parents can do right now to create a home and family that exhibits love, harmony, and generosity of spirit in a self-centered world.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a blogger (SamiCone.com), radio host & TV correspondent mentoring others to live their dream life on less and pursue their passions. I draw on my experiences as a writer, editor, university professor, performer, professional athlete, and pageant winner to help women realize their full potential in life. As well as being the author of "Raising Uncommon Kids", I'm known as the "Frugal Mom" on Nashville's top-rated talk show "Talk of the Town”, host the nationally syndicated “Family Money Minute”, and educate over a million listeners every morning on radio's "Family Friendly Morning Show".

I'm proud to call Nashville home with my husband Rick, and our two children (a daughter & son) who are 19 months apart. We love traveling and are happy to sacrifice the "stuff" of life so we can fuel our mission of being a family on the go together!

What was your motivation behind this project?  The genesis for this book was a moment when my daughter was seven and had an extremely selfish moment. I asked God to give me a word, and He planted a fable in my head that spoke to her about compassion like nothing ever before. To the credit of my book agent, he realized that if I had this heart’s cry, other parents must too.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  That parenting uncommon kids is less about our children's behavior and more about our own: in order to raise uncommon kids, we must first be uncommon ourselves.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  It's forced me even more so to turn the mirror on myself before reacting to my kids' words and actions. You can't write a book titled "Raising Uncommon Kids" without coming under a lot of scrutiny, and it's forced me to really put the words God laid on my heart into practice on a daily basis!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I wake up every morning (like I have for the past 15 years) reading Oswald Chambers' "My Utmost for His Highest". I admire his way to take God's Word and make it insanely practical in our current day, even though it was written so long ago. I'm also forever changed and challenged by my spiritual momma, best selling author Jackie Kendall. Not only does she have an amazing love for and knowledge of God's Word, but she reminds me to be like the Red Sea, not the Dead Sea, everyday - what's poured into me must also be poured out of me and shared with others.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Parenting is not a destination, but a journey. Keep the faith, constantly communicate, and call on a team around you to pick you up when you feel weary. It's my goal for my readers/listeners to not just do what I do, but I hope to challenge them to think about why they do what they do.
