Publisher's Description

"You may lack limbs, but don't let that define what you can or can't do."

That’s the life-changing advice Boris Vujicic spoke to his son, Nick, who was born without arms or legs. With the help of his parents, Nick has become an internationally-known inspirational speaker, a best-selling author, the founder of the non-profit organization Life Without Limbs and, most importantly, a loving and responsible husband and father himself.

But Nick’s journey didn’t start there. Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child is the inspiring, powerfully transparent story of how two unprepared and overwhelmed parents–Boris and Dushka Vujicic–overcame their grief, fears, and badly shaken faith to raise such an accomplished, faith-filled, and perfectly imperfect son.

Through their stories, Boris offers practical advice and encouragement for all parents facing a "new normal" when raising a special needs or unique child. With tenderness, he addresses the spiritual, emotional, and financial challenges, and offers insights on how to equip a child for happiness and success in life.

Your Guide to Giving Your Child with Special Needs  LOVE, ROOTS, & WINGS

A Special…Rewarding Journey

Told from the perspective of a humble father, who at times questioned God and his own worthiness, this book addresses the unique challenges of raising a special needs child.

Facing a mountain of doubts and debt, the Vujicics feared their son would never be able to get out of bed, let alone receive an education, support himself, or have a family of his own. And they questioned how a loving Father in heaven could have allowed this to happen.

Yet once they gave up their narrow expectations for the perfect child, their imperfect son taught them that there are no limits to what a determined, faith-filled, and unstoppable individual can accomplish with the help of supportive parents and a caring God.

Boris candidly addresses this family’s journey as Nick becomes aware of–and overcomes–the extent of his disabilities, as well as bullying, despair, and suicidal impulses. Other challenges included the stress a child with a disability put on their marriage and not neglecting the needs of their other children.

Overflowing with inspiration and practical advice, Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child helps every parent understand that they can find the strength to give a child what is needed, despite the challenges faced.  And the results include the rewards of a satisfying and joyful spiritual life.

Editorial Reviews

"Everyone knows that Nick Vujicic is a remarkable man of great courage, passion, and grace. But most people do not know the person who invested the most in shaping Nick’s character. In this wonderful book, you will discover a father’s loving heart for the son he did not quite expect—and you will learn that there is much more to successfully raising a child with a disability than you’d ever imagine. I highly recommend Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child to anyone who has questions about bringing up a special-needs son or daughter. Actually, its powerful and very personal message will bless any parents who long to show the unbiased love of Christ within their family. Read it and be blessed!"
Joni Eareckson Tada, Joni and Friends International Disability Center

"You may lack limbs, but don't let that define what you can or can't do." That's the life-changing advice Boris Vujicic spoke to his son, Nick, who was born without arms or legs.

Summary: With the help of his parents, Nick has become an internationally known inspirational speaker, a best-selling author, the founder of the nonprofit organization Life Without Limbs and, most important, a loving and responsible husband and father himself.

But Nick's journey didn't start there. Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child is the inspiring, powerfully transparent story of how two unprepared and overwhelmed parents -- Boris and Dushka Vujicic -- overcame their grief, fears, and badly shaken faith to raise such an accomplished, faith-filled, and perfectly imperfect son.

Through their stories, Boris offers practical advice and encouragement for all parents facing a "new normal" when raising a child with special needs or unique challenges. With tenderness, he addresses the spiritual, emotional, and financial challenges, and offers insights on how to equip a child for happiness and success in life.

My reaction: I cannot say enough about this book, it is that good. I read it just as it was being released by the publisher. I pray that it is a best seller. I hope people won't dismiss it because they've heard Nick, the author's son, or read his books. This book is good in its own merit.

Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child is a book for all readers who have experienced stress in their lives, whether they have a disabled child or not. Whether they are parents or not, for that matter. It's a great read for those who want to understand to some degree the life of a parent of a disabled child. It's also a great read for anyone desiring practical life application of Biblical principles.

When I chose the book I didn't recognize the name, didn't realize that Nick Vujicic is the author's son, that he is an adult in his own right. Not that it makes any difference, except in the author's perspective, which is undoubtedly more objective and richer spiritually than if the child were still a child.

The book is divided into ten chapters by varying subjects which are somewhat chronological throughout a parent's life. It is written in narrative style, and does not read like a textbook. The author is a humble man, not the voice of authority, though he and his wife are undoubtedly authorities on the subject of parenting. His writing style is that of sharing their experiences in hope of encouraging others.

Each chapter concludes with 'Takeaway Thoughts', bullet point reviews of the chapter's main points. The book is not preachy. It speaks from personal experience.

As I read, the following quotes stood out:

"I believe that is the purpose for each one of us,

to be the inspiration and the light in our own corners of the world,

no matter what circumstances we face."

(Boris Vujicic, Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child, page 174)

"The lesson is, don't miss the boat while waiting for a miracle.

Take help where you can find it.

This lesson applies to all people in crises or under intense stress and particularly to parents of disabled and special-needs children."

(Boris Vujicic, Raising the Perfectly Imperfect Child, page 176)

This is a book of extraordinary faith in an extraordinary God, and is a testament to the unending grace of God, which is sufficient for every need of every person in every circumstance.

    My rating: 5 stars

Ten chapters of humbly given advice to parents of children with disabilities, which in principle embody practical tips for life in general. Beautifully weaves the story of their lives as parents, with practical lessons learned from the parenting experience.

How can the reader help but respect such humble honesty? And how can the reader not only gain an understanding of the difficulties of parenting a disabled child, but also learn the value of trusting a loving God to provide all that parent (and child) needs?

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher through Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
