I think that this was a practical, Christian and insightful book from two counselors. This was written by those folks that we as parents could one day turn to in person to ask for help. This book takes many of their insights and we as mothers get to become better mothers to our daughters.

    Hopeful Mom
As a mother of a girl, I have found great information, perspective, wisdom, and a healthy dose of hope in this warmly written book on raising a girl. I've read many parenting books in recent years and this one offers a few things many don't. First, it gives insight into how well documented stages of development play into a girl's spiritual development - how girls understand and receive God in each developmental stage. This has helped me as a Christian mom understand my daughter's relationship with God better and know how I can encourage her to grow in it. Secondly, Raising Girls is full of hope and perspective. As parents, we hear plenty about the dangers and pitfalls facing our girls and those are certainly real. These authors seem to be saying, while all that is out there, God is bigger. They point the reader to God and the hope He offers by giving us a new perspective on our day-in-day-out interactions with our daughters. They give a glimpse of how all we are and have and will experience with our girls can work together for a very hopeful future. This has helped me to panic less! Lastly, it is just fun to read. Reading Raising Girls is like visiting with a great friend who encourages and challenges and tells some really great stories too. It certainly fits the reader who "reads to know they are not alone" -especially when it comes to parenting a daughter of any age! In Raising Girls, you'll find a friend.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Sissy Goff
Located in: Nashville, TN
Submitted: October 21, 2007

Tell us a little about yourself.  Hi! My name is Sissy Goff and I am the co-author for Raising Girls with Melissa Trevathan. Melissa and I are both counselors in Nashville, TN at a wonderful place called Daystar Counseling Ministries. It's a little yellow house with a big front porch where hurting kids and families come to receive counseling and find hope. Our staff includes seven full-time counselors, one development director, an art teacher, two office managers, and two full-time dogs--Molasses, an Old English Sheepdog and Noel, a fifteen year-old blind Maltese.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Raising Girls was born out of many conversations we've had with parents over the years...parents who are wondering what is going on with their girls and how they can help.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  What we really hope folks will gain is...hope. Parenting is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs any one will ever hold. It is also one of the most confusing. The way you parent one child may not work with another. Plus, we are in a culture that is changing continually, and the issues facing girls seem to be getting more complicated, as well. What we both want is to come alongside parents...to laugh together, talk, share stories, and hopefully gain a little insight into who God is creating each of their girls to be.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I would say we both learned a lot in this process. Taking a deeper look into the lives of girls made us look a little deeper into our lives as girls...growing up. We both laughed a lot as we remembered our narcissistic years (11-14) and were reminded of God's faithfulness to us both through each of our being raised!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Wow...we both love to read, so we have a lot. Eugene Peterson, Madeleine L'Engle, Henri Nouwen, Frederick Buechner, Elizabeth Goudge, Larry Crabb, Dan Allender, Walter Wangerin, CS Lewis, George MacDonald, Bob Benson, Brennan Manning...maybe that's enough for now!

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  We just are so grateful to be in this place where we're able to sit each day hearing the hearts and struggles of girls and their families. Raising Girls is our way of wanting to help more families than we're able to touch in our little yellow house in Nashville...to share what we're learning and hearing to parents everywhere about how God is faithfully at work growing and redeeming the lives of our girls--and those of us who are raising them.
