"Raising Boys by Design is a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable read. It's marvelously inspiring, well thought out, and academically supported, but it's also an intuitive guide to raising boys. Every parent, teacher, and grandparent could benefit from this work." - GARY THOMAS, author of Sacred Marriage and Sacred Parenting

"We live in a society where it's dangerous to be a normal, rambunctious, healthy boy. Raising Boys by Design brilliantly exposes this destructive trend while providing meaningful insights and applicable solutions. If you want to protect your sons from the corrosive effects of today's world and empower them to become men after God's own heart, then this book is for you.” - TIMOTHY R. JENNINGS, MD, author of The God-Shaped Brain, president -elect of the Tennessee Psychiatric Association, and chairman, board of regents, of the Southern Psychiatric Association

Backed by brain-science research, the Bible, personal experience, and a passion to impact boys, Gregg and Michael have created a playbook for Christian parents that will equip them to call their boys to follow Jesus into HEROIC manhood. If you have a son, a grandson, or a significant boy in your life, you will want to have this book by your side as you guide him on his journey to manhood." - TIM WRIGHT, pastor of Community of Grace in Peoria, Arizona, and author of Searching for Tom Sawyer: How Parents and Congregations Can Stop the Exodus of Boys from Church

"I wish I'd had this book when my three boys were young. Chapter 2 is worth the cost of the whole book. A must-read for every parent, this even has great material for raising girls!" - DAVID STOOP, PHD, author and psychologist

Having just studied the function and design of the human brain, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review the book, Raising Boys by Design, by Gregory L Jantz, PhD and Michael Gurian. With a unique blend of science and the truths of the Bible, the authors carefully craft a well thought out set of instructions that detail the divine design of your boys life, and than put an action plan in place for you as a parent to implement during your sons journey to manhood.

Having raised one son into adulthood, and still headlong into the journey with our youngest son, all while having two amazing young ladies in our home; I especially enjoyed the chapters that dealt with the structural differences in the brains of male and females. Many times the words on the page rang true, especially during the discussion of gray and white matter circuitry areas of the brain. It became quite obvious that there are ways that I as a parent could implement, to make our day to day household tasks run in a smoother fashion.

Raising Boys By Design, doesnt just read like a textbook, but rather transitions into a how to manual, with practical advice for parents of boys. They call this section of the book, Putting it to Work. After all, parenting does take work. Lots of work. With a roadmap for success, like that of Raising Boys by Design, I believe parents will be given a new set of tools to make the repairs necessary in their household.

I was provided a free copy of this book by Waterbrook Multnomah for the purpose of review. All opinions are my own.

Raising Boys by Design by Gregory L. Jantz and Michael Gurian is an amazing book. I am having such a tough time getting through it, not because it isn't a good read, but because it is packed with so much good stuff.

As a mom of 3 girls and 1 boy - I see the difference between boys and girls every day. This book helps me to realize I am not alone in the unique craziness of my boy. Not only is it helping me understand my son, but also my husband. Realizing that they are not like us girls, is key to helping both little boys and men be who God created them to be.

Any one who has boys, anyone who is married, anyone who wants to teach a parenting class - this book is for you! Seriously, I highly highly recommend this book. It is an easy read, not to heady and an application at the end of each chapter. You won't be disappointed. Pick it up!

This book actually is helping me become a better wife. As I learned about the male brain I began to understand that Hubby is not being a jerk when he doesn't remember all twenty-five things I spew at him in a five minute conversation, but his brain is created to process the world differently. Duh! I have heard this before, but the candid way the authors' drive this point home, helped it sink in. I realize I need to alter my approach and stop expecting Hubby to respond with a female brain. Each gender is created by God's design, differently, and that is a good thing!

My three favorite sections were at the end of the book. These chapters addressed: the male brain and technology, providing a rite of passage into manhood, and how the church needs to improve its approach in connecting with males and their design. The practical content in these chapters alone makes this book worth reading (you can read Chapter One here).

Our boys are on a quest, and it is our job to help them emerge a hero..."Boys go and out and do dangerous and high-risk things as part of their hunger and as their attempts of self-maturation. This behavior is driven by their hormones and developmental design, and it's a series of action-oriented ways of saying, 'Look, folks, I'll keep attempting these dangerous (and sometimes downright stupid) rites of passage into power and adulthood until you, my elders, help me grow into adulthood in even more accomplished and thrilling ways'" (Raising Boys by Design, pg. 182).

Raising Boys By Design: What The Bible And Brain Science Reveal About What Your Son Needs To Thrive, written by Gregory Jantz and Michael Gurian, is a book centered around guiding its readers into an understanding of how to raise unique, God centered boys.

Try as we might, sometimes as parents we find ourselves at a loss when it comes to properly guiding the growth of our children, especially boys. Seeking advice from others verbally or from print materials does not classify us as bad parents. It simply means we understand the importance of raising our children properly.

For the Christian, it can be difficult to find materials that combine logic, science, and Godly perspectives in way that they are intertwined without the need for the compromising of faith. Raising Boys by Design is one such publication that utilizes these important resources in a way that draws upon logic and science with a strong base of Godly perspectives.

Greg and Michael comparatively describe raising a boy and the transformation of a hero, in that as we raise our boys properly, they become what they desire most--to be a hero. They utilize an archetype for hero which transforms the word HERO into the following: Honor, Enterprise, Responsibility, Originality, all of which are characteristics most desire to find within their children.

For it's wonderful message, powerful lessons, and Godly perspective, this book is a recommended read for all Christians seeking to raise their boys into Godly men.

Raising Boys By design authored by Gregory L. Jantz , PhD and Michael Gurian with Ann McMurray is a book that will offer parents of boys some great information. The authors give amazing insight into how boys think, work and function. As a mother of a son with ADHD, I often feel at a disadvantage because I don't always know when my son is "just being a boy" or when there's more to it. This book gave me some great tools in relating to my son on a higher level.

The authors wrote about how the school system can often fail our sons. This is something I agree with heartily. I previously homeschooled and still appreciate how I was able to teach my son exactly how HE needed to learn. While the "system" may fail our sons, I really believe it depends on each teacher. There are some that understood that boys need to be active, while others do not. This is something I have learned as a Mom. Pre-being a mother of a son, I would have expected boys to sit still and quiet like my daughter. I've learned that this is not how it works with him. He learns best when he is active. Studying math facts while playing catch with my son is much more effective than having him sit on a chair across from me while making him answer flash cards. I'm so thankful for the reminder of this fact about how boys learn. It will enable me to be a much better mom when it comes to homework time!

I also liked how this book gave information from a male perspective of how things are for boys growing up and hitting puberty. Puberty scare me! This book helped me to understand more about what will be happening with my son. I'm heading into this stage prepped with some good reading material and many hours spent on my knees!

I highly recommend this book to Mothers, Fathers, Youth Pastors and Teachers!

I received a complimentary copy of Raising Boys By Design from Waterbrook Press in exchange for this review. I was in no way paid for this review.
