This well-researched book explores the many names of God and how He relates to us. John Averys scholarly presentation lends itself to reading a brief portion at a time in order to consider the truths presented and allow them to sink in. I am enjoying this exploration even though I have studied some of the names in the past. I wish the endnotes would have been incorporated into the text so the reader didnt have to flip to the back so often. Personal anecdotes lighten the heaviness of the academic material, making it an inviting and approachable book, especially when entering Chapter 3, one that might have been better to start with.

Ive read many books on the names of God. While many were initially enlightening, most tended to merely focus on one verse containing each Hebrew name and the definition of the name. I enjoy the extra depth of a study with cross-referencing (like multiple character references or witnesses). Averys book on Gods names is the difference between an appetizer and a 7-course meal.

Averys book provided an in-depth study of each name from several perspectives. The Biblical narrative is, as it should be, always primary and referenced from the original language, thankfully in a readable and understandable format. Historically, I appreciate the background studies. Psychologically, the personal stories of experiencing and understanding the name of God, enhanced understanding and experientially, I was grateful to find realistic personal life application from both spiritual and personal reflections.

Savoring each name over a week wbecame my favorite way to go through The Name Quest. My plan was to read, absorb and notate from two-three pages per day, then review at weeks end. Just as with chapter or word studies, I like to re-write the essence of the teaching in my own words, to help me capture the fullness of the teaching in a memorable way. I then go back to the scripture and highlight the key word (in this case the name of God) and write in 2-3 words of definition or application.

This book is a treasure. The layers of teaching produce new insights with each reading. Every pastor, serious student of the scriptures and anyone desiring to deepen the intimacy of their walk with God should have The Name Quest in their library.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided in return for an honest review.

    What is in a name?

While Shakespeare tells us that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, I doubt people would plant it in their gardens if it was called Blight Delight or Aphid Haven. So names do matter when we understand their meaning. Problems can arise and benefits are lost when names and their meanings are disjointed. In western culture our names are, for the most part, completely lost to their meanings. How different it is for the Nigerian man I met who told me his name and I asked him what it meant and he said, "Joy returns home." Can you imagine the impact on a child when every time their parents call them they hear that they are their joy! I think it is part of the reason why pet names, nicknames and sweet lover names are so common and important to us. Deep inside we know that names do matter.

However, we may not have made this same association with God. We may not even be aware that He has many names. Understanding these names can give us powerful insights into who He really is. We move beyond our preconceived ideas from the term "God" which isn't a name at all, but an impersonal job description. Impersonal job titles evoke prejudiced perspectives. (If in doubt stop a moment and ponder what comes to mind when you think "janitor".) I think this explains the trend of upgrading job titles for lowly jobs.

This is a scholarly book, well researched sprinkled throughout with modern parables and Biblical passages to illustrate its points. It brought deeper understanding of the many names of God and how they help us understand (as much as we are able) this Being who is beyond our understanding yet who desires to be known. I realize how much it has changed my thinking when I wanted to end that last sentence with "the God Who wants to be Known". From a change in perspective can come a change in relationship. It would be an excellent guide for a small study group or a topical Bible study and may also help a believer connect with and worship the great Creator Who inspires Awe, Who is Mighty and Able, Who loves us and saves us, Who .......
