This is a lovely story of a Godly family who go through and come out of a trial together. WHen things go wrong, the main character, a young lad, shows his determination through old fashioned hard work. Woven throughout is the father's simple trust that the Lord is in control and his emphasis on family values. A happy, unexpected ending rounds it off. I would place this at advanced second or third grade reading level. Perfect for reading aloud, especially to horse lovers or boys.

My son (1st grade) LOVED this book. He was able to read it on his own, and needed little help. The story was exciting and interesting to him. As a mom, I found the story very wholesome and inspiring. We wish there were more books just like this!

This book is not a second grade level. The text verbiage is so outdated. This absolutely did not motivate my child to want to read, all it did was frustrate her. The story seemed to be so confusing and full of adjectives that weren't needed. The way it was written it would be very difficult for a child this age to read and understand successfully by themselves.
