Drawing on over twenty years of study Gerald H. Wilson in Psalms, Vol. 1 [NIVAC] provides critical links between the Bible and the modern world. While he considers each psalm in itself, Wilson goes much further, examining whole groups of Psalms and, ultimately, the entire Psalter (though this volume is limited to Psalms 1-72 in terms of Psalms under specific discussion), its purpose, and its use from the days of the Hebrew temple worship onward through church history. In so doing, Wilson opens our eyes to ageless truths for our lives here and now.

Perhaps more clearly than any other part of the biblical canon, the Psalms are human words directed to God. Yet, through the Holy Spirit, these honest, sometimes brutal words return to us as the Word of God. Their agonies and exaltations reflect more than the human condition in which they were created. Within the context of the canonical Psalter, they become the source of divine guidance, challenge, confrontation, and comfort. However, it is possible to misapply them. How can we use the Psalms in a way that faithfully connects Gods meaning in them and his intentions for them with our circumstances today? Drawing on over twenty years of study in the book of Psalms, Dr. Gerald H. Wilson reveals the links between the Bible and our present times. While he considers each psalm in itself, Wilson goes much further, examining whole groups of psalms and, ultimately, the entire Psalter, its purpose, and its use from the days of Hebrew temple worship onward through church history. In so doing, Wilson opens our eyes to ageless truths for our twenty-first-century lives. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but dont discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuablebut the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.
The NIV Application Commentary Series doesn't fool around: it gets right down to business, brining this ancient and powerful word of God into the present so that it can be heard and believed with all the freshness of a new day, with all the immediacy of a friend's embrace.
The NIV Application Commentary Series helps pastors and Bible teachers with one the most neglected elements in good preaching--accurate, useful application. Most commentaries tell you a few things that are helpful and much that you do not need to know. By dealing with the original meaning and contemporary significance of each passage, the NIV Application Commentary Series promises to be helpful all the way around.

Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA
This series promises to become an indispensable tool for every pastor and teacher who seeks to make the Bible's timeless message speak to this generation.
Here, at last, is a commentary that makes the proper circuit from the biblical world to main street. The NIV Application Commentary is magnificent gift to the church.
College Church, Wheaton, IL
Here at last is a commentary which is not only academically well informed but which helps the contemporary reader hear God's word and consider its implications; scholarship in the service of the church.
If you want to avoid hanging applicational elephants from interpretive threads, then the NIV Application Commentary Series is for you. This series excels at both original meaning and contemporary significance. I support it one hundred percent.

It takes more than interpretation of God's word to change lives, it takes application. Application is the bottom line in teaching and preaching. Without it, we've missed the point of the Bible. The NIV Application Commentary is an outstanding resource for pastors and anyone else who is serious about developing "doers of the word".
The NIV Application Commentary Series shares the same goal that has been the passion of my own ministry--communicating God's word to a contemporary audience so that they feel the full impact of its message.
Willow Creek Community Church
This series dares to go where few scholars have gone before--into the real life world of biblical application faced by pastors and teachers everyday. This is everything a good commentary series should be.
Pastor, Wooddale Church
Some commentaries build walls that isolate you back in the ancient world. The NIV Application Commentary builds bridges that make the Bible come alive with meaning for contemporary life--and the series do so concisely, clearly, and accurately. No wasted words or academic detours--just solid help and practical truth.

The Geeky Calvinist5 Stars Out Of 5A Wonderful Work on Psalm 1-72February 20, 2018The Geeky CalvinistQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Book of Psalms, is an Old Testament commentary, written by Gerald H. Wilson published by Zondervan Academic. This commentary is one of the finest volumes in the NIV Application Commentary Series , a series which is synonymous with superior exegesis and excellent application, this volume continues this legacy. This volume is one of the most articulate and practical modern commentaries on the book of Psalms. While Wilson is no stranger to Biblical commentaries this is his first foray into this renowned commentary series.
This commentary sits at the top of most pastors commentary list for this book of wisdom literature. Not only is this book touted as one of the best volumes in the series it is one of the best volumes on the book of Psalms ever to be published. The first 72 Psalms are thoroughly treated looking not only at the Hebrew text but dealing with critical questions, exegetical points, and practical application. This commentary truly is for both the pastor and Scholar. Furthermore it is not an accessible to the Layman who desires to get a thorough treatment of Psalms for their understanding.
I highly recommend this commentary as the first pick of any Pastor for a series on the book of Psalms as well as to the scholar who is looking to write a paper on a specific theme or Psalm. You can truly not go wrong with this superb commentary on Psalms 1-72.
This book was provided to me free of charge from Zondervan Academic in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.

The author managed to produce a commentary that is technical enough for the scholar and readable enough for the layman. One can use it to write an exegetical paper and for devotions as well. How the author managed to accomplish this great feat is remarkable.
It has a lot of material indispensable for sermon preparation. I wish Dr. Wilson would have written vol 2 as well.
The is a must have commentary on the Psalms.

Dr Wilson strikes a remarkable balance between professional and layman accessable information. His opinions on application are right on target and very insightful. I'm finding this book my primary resource for psalms study and am praying that his second edition comes out in time to lead my study group when we're ready for the second half of the psalms.
