Jessica R. Patch has woven a truly chilling and spine-tingling tale of romantic suspense. And there's a dog. Yeah, as a pet-lover you totally have me as soon as a dog or cat makes an appearance. Of, course, I was actually hooked before then. The story was so engrossing that I picked up my Kindle in the late afternoon and finished by early evening. I just couldn't seem to put it down, I HAD to know if my guess about the killer's identity was correct. Romantic suspense is my favorite genre and I am definitely a fan of Jessica R. Patch's exciting stories, of which Protective Duty is an excellent example.
(I received a copy of this e-book from the author in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.)
Trixi5 Stars Out Of 5Reader beware! An intense action-packed, keeps-you-awake -at-night kind of read ahead!July 3, 2016TrixiQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I simply couldn't hardly put this book down! If it weren't for needing sleep, I would have read this in one entire sitting well into the wee hours of the morning! It was that good. Or maybe the intense suspense & the threat of a killer loose kept my eyes open, my heart pounding and my senses super-heightened! I questioned every creak of my house, down to the dripping faucet in the bathroom. If you're like me and love a suspense book that keeps you hyper-aware, then this is one for you! The author does an excellent job of bringing her readers into the story; from running for their lives along with the characters to laughing at their sarcastically witty humor. She has a unique writers voice that resonates with a person! As for the spiritual theme, she encouraged me by reminding me that all the heartache and pain I've been through in my own life was all for a better purpose. To shape and mold me into a stronger person in Christ & to realize that God never left me, He was right there alongside me always. It brings the scripture verse to mind in Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Bryn begins to see this in her own life & once again trusts the Father to make her life for a good purpose! I love seeing characters grow in their walk with the Lord, or come back to Him after walking away. As for Eric, I believe God made him a stronger Godly man through the story as things unfolded and he was able to minister to Bryn. All the elements I love come to life in this story, heart-pounding suspense to keep me awake late in the night, two people working together to bring a killer to justice, past hurts healed as they work through things & of course, love to be re-kindled; both of the characters but most importantly, love of the Father!
This is from the author's notes in the back and I hope it encourages you as well as it did me: "There's a saying that when it rains it pours. Bryn experienced a lot of tragedy in her life, which shattered her dreams, family and hope. She felt as if she couldn't trust God anymore because He forgot about her. Maybe you've felt the same way. It took a while, but Bryn finally saw the even with all the horrible things that had happened to her, God loved her. He never stopped. He was still faithful and in control. If it hadn't been for those very tragedies, Bryn would have never gone into law enforcement. It was there she discovered her passion to help others. She felt more satisfied than ever before. If we let God, He'll take all those tragedies, all the rain that's been pouring, and make something beautiful grow from it!"

Jodie Bailey5 Stars Out Of 5Be prepared to stay up late reading!June 28, 2016Jodie BaileyQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Jessica Patch has done it yet again, and this one will keep you flipping pages well past your bedtime. Every time I think I know what she's doing, she surprises me. A suspenseful mystery packed with danger, a love story filled with forgiveness and redemption... I hate to say too much because I don't want to give anything away. Let's just say I was sufficiently creeped out by the end and loving every minute of it. :-) Pick up Protective Duty and every other book you can by Jessica Patch. You won't be sorry. **I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.** (I'd have bought it anyway...) :-)
Melissa5 Stars Out Of 5A must read!!!June 5, 2016MelissaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Protective Duty is a must read! I fell in love with Jessica Patch's writing after reading Fatal Reunion. Readers meet Detective Eric Hale in Fatal Reunion and Protective Duty stars Eric and an awesome female character, Bryn Eastman. Although this book can be read as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading Fatal Reunion first.
Bryn, an FBI profiler, comes home to Memphis to track down a serial killer. She is assigned to work with Eric, a homicide detective who is also her ex-boyfriend. Bryn is there to hunt down a vicious killer, but very early on readers are thrown into the action when Bryn begins being hunted by this killer as well. The race is on to find out who has been murdering these women in Memphis before Bryn becomes his next victim. Bryn and Eric have quite a history, but you'll have to read to find out if they can move past some heartbreaking past events in both their lives to make a relationship work again.
If you're looking for a book with strong characters, fast-paced action, edge of your seat suspense, and a message of hope and reconciliation, Protective Duty is the book for you.

SusanClover, SCAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Another Winner for Jessica Patch!June 1, 2016SusanClover, SCAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The first book of Jessica Patch's I picked up sealed the deal for me that she was a fantastic author and one I wanted to follow! I still hold to that opinion and most likely always will. Great character development, great stories, awesome action, and a deep spiritual message.
I loved this one so much because I met Eric in Fatal Reunion and I just knew he deserved his own book. He is a great character as is the female lead. The culprit was one that kept me guessing until he/she was revealed. (Don't want to give anything away here.)
Jessica Patch has a very strong message for Christ in her books; doesn't shy away from the Gospel. That means a very great deal to me.
I loved every single mine and I look forward to the next.
