When Annies letters mysteriously stop, Michael risks everything to fulfill his promiseand find the woman hes grown to lovebefore shes lost forever.
Gohlke's historical romance, set during the time of the Titanic and World War I, explores the depth of human nature and emotions through its three-dimensional, compelling characters, Michael and Annie, as well as numerous minor characters. They keep a familiar and sometimes overused setting from becoming a cliche. Placing the sinking Titanic within its historical context just before World War I also helps keep the story fresh.
Promise Me This illustrates the truth shown in John Bunyan's classic work, Pilgrim's Progress: when we drop our burdens at the foot of the cross, we find peace and freedom. Or, as Psalm 55:22 says, "Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you." Although this is not a book for readers who want heart-pounding action on every page, Promise Me This will certainly satisfy romance readers who enjoy historical details and character-driven plots. Tina H.4 Stars Out Of 5Promise Me ThisJanuary 14, 2018Tina H.Quality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Promise Me This by Cathy Gohlke is an interesting book not only about the Titanic, but also about what happens to a family after the tragedy and World War I. I highly recommend this book for any age.
CindiPennsylvaniaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Outstanding!January 18, 2017CindiPennsylvaniaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5When I learned that this book was about the Titanic, for some reason I expected it to be similar to the popular movie. Boy, was I wrong. Wrong in a great way, though. The Titanic is just the beginning of this well composed story.
There is so much at stake for Owen and his sister, Annie, when Owen decides to go in search of a better life in America. When Annie learns about the sinking of the ship and how Michael survived due to the love and sacrifice of Owen, she is torn. She doesn't know how to feel. Annie feels anger, hurt, sadness and so many other emotions. Can she get past the turmoil? Can she ever feel peace?
This author has an incredible writing ability. She brings her characters to life. One cannot help but feel deep emotion when reading the pages.
I highly recommend Promise Me This for anyone who enjoys a well told and amazingly written historical fiction. Cathy Gohlke is an author that not only inspires but takes her readers into the story. This book is going on my "keeper" shelf along with the others of hers that I've read.
Angela4 Stars Out Of 5Titanic and MoreDecember 9, 2015AngelaQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a refreshingly different kind of Titanic story, well written, and a definite page-turner. I gave this four stars because I felt the cruel aunt was wielding too much power unrealistically. Here is this old, bitter, hateful woman who is in poor health, yet with extensive power over so many different people in the early 20th century, leading up to and in the middle of a war?
Other than that, though, I enjoyed the story and do recommend it - I find Cathy Gohlke a very talented author - will definitely want to read more from her.
Danielle Hull5 Stars Out Of 5LOVE Cathy Gohlke's characters!June 24, 2015Danielle HullQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My second Cathy Gohlke book in a week. I am hooked. I love her characters; they stay with me for days after I finish their story. Their situations are foreign to me, but their thoughts and emotions are not. They struggle and learn to trust God and do it His way. This story deals with forgiveness, trust, and learning to do the right thing even when it goes against expectations others have of you.
I wasn't sure I'd like the historical and physical setting of the Titanic but I did really enjoy it. It made me cry. I was surprised that she had the ship go down in one piece, as my understanding is that it broke in half. Otherwise, I appreciated the historical setting of Titanic and WWI.
Note: I noticed one of the critical reviews, and I must say that though the book was long, I read it in two days, and that's with 7 kids at home! It was that good! And I found the story to be believable in the chaos of war.
Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Magnificent Inspirational Epic!February 9, 2015Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5An epic story; brilliantly written, reminiscent of a Shakespearean tragedy but penned from an entirely different perspective. Easy to read? Not particularly. Worth the investment of time and emotion? Absolutely.
Annie and Michael's story was truly riveting, so much so that I allowed myself a couple of mental "recesses" between sections; reading two other books, primarily to refuel my emotional stamina. What a rare example of true inspirational fiction; this one is magnificent and that's a promise!
