A completely enjoyable read, with wonderfully realistic and believable situations, and characters.

Wow! This was in my mind the perfect vacation read, charming, with a touch of humor, yet with a realness to it that drew me in. I absolutely loved the characters, and thought that they were well built. I especially liked how in this Amish Romance I got to see things from Gabe's daughter, Grace's prospective too! Which was different in an enjoyably refreshing way. This is the kind of book that I was able to relax with, yet couldn't put down for too long, thus the perfect vacation read :)

I liked how in this novel the relationship between Gabe and Miriam developed naturally and at its own pace, out of a friendship. And how all of the characters had a good head on their shoulders.

There were also other elements to the story that added a sense of realness to it, like how the Amish might feel about all the tourists dropping by and such. The setting was well developed as well.

Overall, this was a completely lovely book, that was highly enjoyable, with lovely characters and setting. I also loved the author's sense of humor, which was easy, like not trying too hard, yet there were a few moments that were laugh-out-loud hilarious :D A book that I happily highly recommend.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Amish fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I've read lots of great books by several great authors. There are many similarities in most of these books -- not a bad thing at all -- but it is also nice to find the little differences that distinguish the various series or various authors.

A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman has all the elements that make for a great Amish story. Miriam King is a young Amish school teacher in Pebble Creek, Wisconsin. Since she has reached an age when most Amish women would be married and probably have children of their own, she has pretty much given up on the idea of looking for real love. Gabe Miller moves from Indiana to make a fresh start with his young daughter Grace, who is

still suffering from the loss of her mother three years earlier. He hopes to settle in quietly and stay as unnoticed as possible in the more conservative Wisconsin community. Things happen -- both frightening and exciting -- which force changes in plans for both Miriam and Gabe.

But there was something more than the expected Amish romance here. When I finished reading the book, one of my first thoughts was something like, "That was refreshing! There was a little different twist to this story from many of the other Amish stories I've read." What was the difference? I still haven't come up with the answer to that question, but I'm glad it was there. The characters had a lot of depth. The conflicts the characters had within themselves and with each other were well developed. The story was told from multiple points of view. Details about the specific Amish community came through in a way that was informative, yet smoothly flowed into the story.

Any fan of Amish fiction should read A Promise for Miriam. I don't know how many Pebble Creek Amish books Vannetta has planned, but she has definitely set the bar for a great series!

Special thanks to Ginger Chen, Marketing Assistant, Harvest House Publishers for sending me a review copy.

This was a very inspiring read- I enjoyed reading it very much! The characters were wonderful, a person could relate to some of their incidents in life, and their struggles to maintain their faith and to keep on moving in their lives.

The romance between Miriam and Gabe was sweet. Gabe's daughter's character was powerful-she was so insightful, way beyond her age. She also had a wonderful sense of humor!

I must also comment about the dog in the story-Pepper, he was lovable and cute. I thought Miriams's dad had a wonderful soft spot for him, and so did I!

I highly recommend this book-you won't be disappointed!

    " A Promise for Miriam"

    By Vannetta Chapman

At this stage of my life, I can honestly say that I have read/reviewed hundreds of Amish fiction novels. Usually, I can predict , within the first few pages, if the book is going to be interesting, have a great plot and if the characters will become part of me. That is not to say, that all of have the same likes or dislikes, however, I knew within moment of opening this book, that it was a HIT!!!

I have reviewed Vannetta's three Shipshewana Amish mysteries and loved them, so of course, wondered how the switch over to Amish romance would be. NO SURPRISE HERE!! A Promise for Miriam is fantastic!!

The plot and characters captured both my emotions, as well as my interest. Never a dull moment in this book. There are intertwining events that keep you guessing at all times. The characters became part of me. Their feelings became mine. I felt their challenges, joys, pains and successes. That is what a good book does for me. It satisfies me in all of these aspects.

Miriam King is an Amish schoolteacher ( - there- you got me right away- so was I , at one time) who truly loved her job and students. At the ripe old age of 26, she is NOT desperate to get married, although others think she should be. She is happy. Most Amish women her age are married and have families, but she has not yet found the person with whom she desires to spend the rest of her life. At least, no one worth giving up her beloved job at Pebble Creek.

Then.... into the scene, steps a widower, Gabe, and his young daughter,- a newcomer to the area. Now , Miriam has to deal with mysteries and challenges, she has never dreamt of having. Gabe , appears to be a very private person who does not share easily his feelings and his problems. He has experienced the pain of losing a loved one - the past haunts him. His daughter, who has some problems that the teacher , Miriam chooses to address, forces the two adults to communicate and work together for a child's well being.

After a near tragedy, Gabe finally accepts and returns the love and friendship of the Amish community. He finds out that he is NOT helpless or useless- he can make a difference to this new area in which he now lives. Will he make a difference to a certain schoolteacher as well??? That is what you need to read to find out.

This is the first book of Vannetta's new series, entitled, "The Pebble Creek Amish Series".

I am anxiously and impatiently waiting for the next book!! When you read a book in a day and a half, you know you have found the reading material that you enjoy and that is well written.

Thank you , Vannetta , for giving me the pleasure of putting myself in another world for a short time!! I LOVED this time with my nose in this book!!
