With a forward from Matthew Becker, foundational theological insights from Edward H. Schroeder, and additional contributions by distinguished theologians, historians, or scholars who were students of Schroeder, Gift and Promise: The Augsburg Confession & The Heart of Christian Theology demonstrates how the theology of the Augsburg Confession remains a living basis for confessing the Christian faith in the twenty-first Century.
Combining historical-critical resources and rigorous scholarship with a faithfully evangelical witness, Schroeder and his nine students celebrate the sixteenth-century evangelical heritage left by Luther, Melanchthon, and the Augsburg Confession, exploring the various themes of the Luther's theology and that of the Augsburg. In the first three chapters, Edward Schroeder traces the "hub" of the Augsburg Confession—the promise of justification by faith alone—to its source in Luther's theology of the cross. The subsequent nine chapters demonstrate how that central hub is articulated in the various articles of faith that comprise the Augsburg Confession.
Gift and Promise offers the church a wonderful gift as we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, illuminating to the deepest meaning of the gospel and the centrality of Christ for our Trinitarian Christian life and ministry.
