Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a Professor of Computer Science, an artist, and computer software entrepreneur. I've taught at IIT in Chicago and Lewis University since the late 90s. In addition, one of my video game companies has created over 200 commercially published products, including Dragonball Z: The Legacy of Goku series on console machines such as the Nintendo GameBoy Advance.
What was your motivation behind this project? As a teacher, I see the short-comings of traditional education. In studying how the human brain learns, I've realized that "traditional education" is not the best way to train a brain. Children (and adults) learn an entirely different way. For thousands of years, older children would "apprentice" a profession. They did not sit in a chair, face forward, and listen to lectures. The modern educational system, which is only a little over 150 years old, is not natural to the way the brain learns. Children learn when they are interested, having fun, and engaged. By gamifying education, maybe we can re-awaken the fun of learning for so many more children who are frustrated by the "one size fits all" approach to education.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Hopefully, this product will make learning Math more accessible to many more children, and instead of getting frustrated and giving up, they will be compelled to go so much farther! Math is so very important to Science and Engineering (and many other subjects), it's a shame it's not a more pleasant experience for more children.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? My parents were both teachers, and while I was growing up, they transformed almost everything into a learning experience. Learning should be fun, and I was lucky to have parents who just happened to be teachers.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Some great authors I've been inspired by include Emanuel Epstein, Murray Gel-man, Richard Feynman for science books, I encourage students to read anything and everything that interests them.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: For most people, education is the single most important thing that will effect every aspect of their lives. This doesn't only include income and affluence, but also intangible gifts, such as appreciation of art, music, hobbies, and passions and books you will read and people you will meet!
