As a board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Michelle Bengtson sees the devastation of depression. Early on, she practiced the most effective treatments and prescribed them for her clients. But when she experienced depression herself, she found that the treatments she had recommended were lacking. Her experience showed her the missing component in treating depression.
In Hope Prevails, Dr. Bengtson writes with deep compassion, blending her training and faith, to offer readers a hope grounded in God's love and grace. She helps readers understand what depression is, how it affects them spiritually, and what, by God's grace, it cannot do. The result is an approach that offers the hope of release, not just the management of symptoms.
For those who struggle with depression and those who want to help them, Hope Prevails offers hope for the future.

There are many who struggle with depression today and I believe that this study along with her original book of the same title can be a great resource for anyone who finds himself/herself in the midst of or heading towards depression.
I love that Dr. Michelle does not discount other causes of depressions(chemical, genetic, secondary, and reactionary), but in recognizing those causes she also points out the spiritual element that goes hand in hand with those other causes. The spiritual root of depression cannot be ignored for those wanting to experience true freedom from depression. The approach to healing that is taught in this study is not a simple...pray this and you will be healed... but gives real actionable steps to healing, restoration, and a rediscovery of who you were created to be. Your illness does not in any way define you, "determine your worth, or dictate your destiny, or separate you from God."
Dr. Michelle walks you through 12 chapters which include resources to help you along the way at the end of each chapter such as: Key thoughts, music playlist suggestions, questions for reflection, and actionable steps.
This is a much-needed resource for the individual experiencing depression or those who know someone going through it. I would highly recommend this Bible Study.
Note: I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review of this book.

Hope Prevails offers a glimpse of Depression from a medical expert who has personally dealt with the debilitating effects of Depression. Dr. Bengtson organized this book into 12 chapters that intuitively steps through the barriers and frustrations of Depression. At the end of each chapter, she gifts the reader with introspection exercises, a prayer, and a list of music.
Although I have never personally dealt with clinical Depression, I know many loved ones who have. For me, Depression is personal for the reason that so many loved ones deal with it. That's what prompted me to pick up Hope Prevails, but I walked away encouraged as well because my own life has sometimes lacked hope as well. Sometimes, Dr. Bengtson seemed too chipper for the serious topic that she was writing about, but on the flip side, it kept this book feeling light rather than exhausting.
I think Hope Prevails offers an easy-to-read opportunity to begin digging into the spiritual side of Depression.

She tells us her story and gives us many solutions to how you deal with it or how to help a loved one going through depression. She goes deep into the feelings of what a person that suffers depression goes through, her story will help those that don't understand why someone that has everything will go through depression. Depression is not a choice, it is a disease that doesn't have an easy solution to solve. When you read "A letter to my depressed self" this is the whole reason she writes the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone going through depression, knows of someone who has depression, or if you or anyone you know thinks they may be depressed. This book is told in an easy to understand way and will keep your interest. This is a very well written and true story that was done in a very classy way that will help others.

Some authors twist the Scriptures to fit there narrative - now this author - guess what - she did it right - she has so many Scripture verses to back up what she was saying - it is rare and wonderful and captivating after you get past the repeating of some of the ideas - now the second thing I learned as a child - the Scriptures say not to add your own words or delete words when you talk about the Scriptures - it is against GOD's law - that is in Revelation - if you had any questions about depression things in your past you will get the Doctors opinion with Scripture to help.
