BonTonMt. Washington, Ky.Age: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5COMFORT AND HOPE THROUGH CHRONIC ILLNESSAugust 21, 2016BonTonMt. Washington, Ky.Age: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0'Praying For the Cure', by Mary J. Nelson, is not only a helpful book for those who have cancer, but also their families, friends, and caregivers. It can also be applied and helpful to those who have any other chronic illness.
Divided into 21 chapters - each a different subject - and followed by prayers pertaining to that particular subject, the book offers scripturally-based answers to the "why?' and numerous other questions one has when undergoing a chronic illness. A cancer survivor herself, the author is very familiar with the emotions and questions a patient with chronic illness encounters.
Being a victim of cancer for the third time - this time stage 4 metastatic and terminal - I rely on prayer, and the close relationship to God it helps me maintain, to get through the trials of serious illness. The prayers and scriptural messages from God in 'Praying For the Cure' are beautifully written and a huge comfort and help for anyone wanting specific prayers to offer on chronic/serious illness.
I was provided a copy of 'Praying For the Cure' by Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest opinion - which I have given.
BarbNewburgh, INAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Powerful HelpAugust 20, 2016BarbNewburgh, INAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Mary J. Nelson has written a wonderful book called Praying for the Cure. It is a book containing hope and help for those stricken with cancer. As a cancer survivor, Ms. Nelson knows the struggles that come with the announcement that you have cancer. It is the scariest sentence you will ever hear. I know, because I am also a cancer survivor. The meditations and prayers that are found in this special book are a gift for those who have been just diagnosed, are receiving treatment, or who are in remission. Even though the cancer may not be present in your body any more, a survivor always has that what if in the back of the mind. Some of the treatments cause so many forms of reactions that its hard to know if the medicine is causing your symptoms or if there is another reason. That is the part that is constantly lurking for a survivor. These meditations and prayers can help those patients keep their faith and their hope alive. I am so pleased that I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, but the book deserved thata positive review. I would recommend this to family, friend, or yourself if you are suffering from cancer or know someone who is. I think this book would be of help to anyone suffering from any kind of dreaded disease. We can all use the hope it gives.
j mcnutt5 Stars Out Of 5Prayers for your journey through cancerAugust 18, 2016j mcnuttQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5When you hear "you have cancer" you are never ready for the overwhelming fear and heaviness that seems to assault you from every angle.
Only those who have had this struggle or are going through it know how paralyzing it is physically and spiritually.
After you cry out to God, you hope you will live, you hope it can be cured and you hope for the life you had "before".
Every emotion changes every day, sometimes minute by minute , as do your prayers.
It is as you reach your emotional end, you can begin to hope again as you seek God through prayer, that you receive His grace, mercy, and strength.
This book Praying for the Cure is written by a cancer survivor and pastor, who understands every fear and emotion that can be experienced by a cancer patient.
She knows how overwhelming even forming a prayer can be, how faith can be tested, and how emotionally draining this disease can be.
This book is a lifeline to our Heavenly Father, using scripture based prayers for when our words refuse to form because of the heaviness of our hearts, and each chapter opens to read what the Father is speaking through His Word, each sentence becomes a healing balm to your spirit. Each prayer is uplifting and encouraging.
This book would be a gift of love for cancer survivors, patients , or know someone who is. It would also be a blessing to read and share the prayers together.

The Flawed Stitch3 Stars Out Of 5Great Prayer GuideAugust 16, 2016The Flawed StitchQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Praying for the Cure by Mary J Nelson is a powerful prayer guide for those who have been impacted by the words nobody longs to hear, "You have cancer." While I do not agree with everything Mary writes in this book, I do see this book as a helpful tool to lead anyone toward a deeper relationship with Christ and a more intense prayer life. I caution readers that God may not answer their prayers for a cure this side of heaven. Their healing may only come after they have passed from this life, and only if they have placed their life in His hands first.
Mary opens each chapter with a narrative from God directed to the reader, my beloved. The remaining portion of the chapter is dedicated to a series of passages of scripture followed by prayer starters for the reader. I found these to be inspirational and a great help, especially for anyone who struggles with how to pray, when to pray, and why to pray. Mary also reminds (or informs) the reader of Gods attributes: wise, sovereign, holy, faithful, loving, powerful, just, merciful, eternal, good, gracious, always present, all knowing. These characteristics of God give us hope when faced with an unbearable burden like cancer.
This book is a good resource to use alongside the Bible and may be a comfort to anyone who is suffering through an illness.
