    Prayer Fatigue. The title caught my attention right away. It put into words to something Ive felt before and just couldnt seem to verbalize. So I picked up Jennifer Kennedy Deans latest offering on prayer, Prayer Fatigue: 10 Ways to Revive Your Prayer Life hoping to find some new tools for the ongoing battle to keep my prayer life fresh. Overall, Id say this book delivered.

    In Prayer Fatigue, Dean addresses things like:

    seeing prayer as part of your to-do list;

    feeling like God is grading you on your prayers;

    trying to follow someone elses prayer patterns;

    being stuck in a prayer rut; and

    feeling that prayer is wasted time.

    Dean offered many useful suggestions for jumping over these hurdles. Probably the thing that helps the most is reframing your idea of what prayer is and what it looks like. Dean says, You dont have a prayer life. You live a praying life. She helps readers see that prayer is a continual connection to Jesus and is a constant awareness of His presence and involvement in our lives.

    One of the major strengths of Prayer Fatigue is the special section at the end of each chapter that includes a time to Reframe and Refocus. Instead of just reading about prayer, readers are encouraged to do somethingto put into practice the principles learned in each chapter.

    While there is so much in this book that is good and the material is certainly fresh and encouraging, it was frustrating to see quote after quote after quote from the authors previous works. It almost felt like the publisher was trying to repackage older works into one newer oneor unashamedly marketing Deans other books. Still, I gleaned enough practical tips and encouragement that I decided to stick with the book anyway.

    Like I said above, overall, this is a helpful book for anyone who feels stuck in a prayer rut. It was positive, encouraging, practical, and focused on prayer as an ongoing relationship with God. However, if youve read any of Deans other books, you may feel a bit like youre re-reading some of her earlier works.

    * Note: I received a copy of the book from NetGalley for this review. However, the opinions expressed in the review are my own.
