The obscure French monk known as Brother Lawrence was a servant of God who spent most of days following Jesus by serving in a kitchen. Brother Lawrence's discipline and servanthood sets an example for all of us by demonstrating how to recapture the intimate friendship with Christ that was shared by the first disciples. He achieved a concentration on God that was rooted in the everyday practicalities of life. Tony Jones brings his rapport with early Christianity to this new edition of a great work. His thoughtful and challenging comments bring the words of Brother Lawrence into historical context and offer spiritual encouragement. Take a few hours to read this book. You'll never look at your life the same way again.

This edition of a timeless classic--enhanced by Emergent leader Tony Jones--will appeal to college students, readers new to Christian classics, and anyone else who desires to learn how to make spirituality a moment-by-moment way of life. Brother Lawrence's Practice of the Presence of God has stood the test of time because it chronicles the life of a very ordinary person who became an extraordinary Christian. Through a life of humility and service, Brother Lawrence achieved something that many Christians aspire to: he was so concentrated on God that God became a part of his every breath. Whether deep in prayer or peeling potatos in the kitchen, he knew God's presence. This readable translation, replete with enlightening background notes, will appeal to today's reader in ways that no other edition has been able to do.

Patti4 Stars Out Of 5November 10, 2012PattiQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3Brother Lawrence's letters are excellent and very timely for this day and age. He shows others how they can be more aware of God's presence in their lives throughout the day.
However, Tony Jones' comments throughout the text are distracting and do not always go along with what the reader may be thinking.
If I buy it again, I would buy it without his comments.

Yesterday I found my little book, reread it and this time my life will be closer to God. Being born again is only the beginning. Knowing that God is beside me every moment of every day in a way that I can share, cry, laugh and enjoy His presence is beyond words. Brother Lawrence had a humility and reality of God's presence that was so very real. It will rub off on you as you read each page. Life can be so much more that we could ever imagine when we feel the presence of our Savior and Lord. God bless everyone as they read this little book of love.
