While searching for a science curriculum to build upon the scientific knowledge base our child acquired during the Logic Stage of the Trivium, I discovered Power Basics Biology by Walch Education.

Power Basics Earth and Space is comprised of sixteen units, which are broken down into the following components:

Unit 1: The Universe Around Us

      Lesson 1: The Cosmos

      Lesson 2: The Solar System

      Lesson 3: Earths Moon

Lesson 4: Observations from Spaceship Earth

Unit 2: The Atmosphere Around Us

Lesson 5: The Atmosphere: Our Life Support System

Lesson 6: Weather in the Atmosphere

Lesson 7: Winds in the Atmosphere

      Lesson 8: The Changing Weather

Unit 3: The Ground Beneath Us

Lesson 9: What is Planet Earth?

      Lesson 10: Within the Crust

      Lesson 11: Beneath the Crust

      Lesson 12: Earths History

      Unit 4: Earths Water Systems

Lesson 13: The Role of Water

      Lesson 14: Ocean Water

      Lesson 15: Surface Water

Lesson 16: Groundwater and Water Protection

Each lesson in the student text follows the format of: Lesson Topic, Goal, Words to Know, Lesson, Tips, Think About It, Tips, Practice and Unit Review. The appendices at the back of the text contain a summary of important information introduced in the book.

The student workbook contains seventy-seven activities designed to be used with the student text. Each activity helps to reinforce, extend or enrich the material in student is covering in the text. The workbook answer key is an individual resource.

The text pack includes a pretest that covers all the material in the student text, a comprehensive test for every unit of the student text, a post test for final testing and assessment after working through the entire student text and answer key and testing guidance for both student and teacher.

The teacher's guide includes an overview for each unit in the student text, suggestions for extension activities, the student text glossary and appendixes, a complete answer key to all the practice activities and unit reviews in the student text, classroom record-keeping forms, and graphic organizers for student use.

Overall, our student has been pleased with Power Basics non-sectarian approach to science. In the future, our student is looking forward to using Power Basics Chemistry and American Government.

I really enjoy using the Power Basics books. The Earth and Space set has great information and vocabulary words for each lesson. These books are easy to us and are great not only for average leaners but also slower paced ones as well. Power Basics are a great value. You get a student text book, a workbook for added learning, a teachers guide, tests, answer key, everything you'll need for the course. I recommend these books for middle schoolers and high schoolers depending on learning speed. Not for the advanced learner. I highly recommend these books!
