In Pockets of Joy, author Roxane Battle shares the story of her divorce and the struggles he had to face as a single mom. Her words are from the debts of her heart, and you can feel the anguish she is feeling as you read her story. Life wasnt easy, the choices she made to give up her job in broadcasting, and her life was completely turned around.

MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5Journey to JoyNovember 1, 2017MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4In this easy-to-read hardbound book, the author vulnerably shares her personal life struggles and joys. Part I seems more like a memoir as she recounts her experiences in television journalism and raising her son. In Part II, she draws seven lessons to help readers reach out for joy. She emphasizes positive choices, intentional living, and perseverance. We must look for the joy in our own situations. She reinforces her points with personal examples and includes a few photos at the end. I enjoyed her stories, but she often mentioned being a divorced single mom as if that is how she views her identity. This doesn't seem to fit with her view of being an overcoming believer--it seems her main ID should be as a victorious child of God. I think readers can glean insights from the authors experiences and find advice to help in their own lives. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

The first part of the book describes how Roxane Battle dealt with being a single mother and a television journalist. In the second part of the book, Battle offers some teachings to the reader that are easily received, because Battle has already proven herself with her real-life examples. At the conclusion of the book, I was cheering for the author as she experienced a climactic event in her life. I was so proud of her for all the good decisions she had made.
I recommend this book for all the uplifting, positive messages that it contains. It was also interesting to get insight into the television news industry.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher, Whitaker House, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5Being intentional about finding joyOctober 28, 2017bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Battle has learned that joy is on the inside, regardless of circumstances. But we do not have joy by accident. She writes, "...we must be intentional about looking for and finding joy." (138) In case we think she has not had to work at finding joy, she shares her own story of being a single mom, facing cuts in her career, and more. She gives practical steps to help us find joy daily. I like her chapter on authenticity and self acceptance. Her other steps include having positive connections with others and developing an attitude of gratitude, for example.
Battle gives a somewhat detailed but very readable account of her life. The book can be a good encouragement and example to those who want to share their life experiences and the lessons they have learned from them. Her story is interesting and her suggestions very good.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
MariIllinoisAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Pockets of JoyOctober 26, 2017MariIllinoisAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Roxane Battle did not pull any stop in sharing her story of life's disappointments, struggles, victories and choosing joy in her life. Pockets of Joy will give women, no matter their age and situation, a glimpse into how to overlook their issues and look inside to be strong and choose to find happiness from within. Battle is an individual many will recognize from her news anchor and public speaking platform that shined, no matter what was happening within her personal life, family dynamics and professional life. The chapter from her son's perspective and ex-husband's gave a clear picture of the lovely blossoming woman Roxane Battle truly is with her decision to always choose joy despite the circumstances of life. As Battle said, "Be good to yourself in whatever healthy and positive way helps you find joy." Page 180
