in the Old Order Amish community of Paradise, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Miriam Raber and Saul Fisher are in their rumschpringe - the running-around period when a teenager turns sixteen years old. they are allowed as much freedom as they can to experience Englisch or non-Amish life before they decide to be baptized.

ever since they can recall, they only have eyes for each other. Miriam knows that Saul would be her husband someday. Saul too loves Miriam but he has plans of leaving the community to pursue his dreams. one day, Miriam's Englisch cousin Shelby is sent to the Raber family by her divorced parents for the summer. she is welcomed by her relatives and finds everything strange yet calming to her troubled soul.

when Miriam finally learns of Saul's plans, she decides to leave with him. Shelby advises her to reconsider especially now that she herself finds the Amish life appealing.

this is the third book on the Amish i have read. honestly, i am beginning to get addicted. even though some of their beliefs and ways may be a little stern or unreasonable from an outsider's perspective, i still see men and women who:

    - live simple lives and enjoy simple pursuits

    - are prone to the same weaknesses or temptations as non-Amish people are

    - practice their faith and stand by it

i also could not help but notice that food and its preparation is a significant part of their daily life and the book mentions this a lot.

Beth Wiseman has written another beautiful story about her beloved Amish. her characters are real in the sense that she does not hide their "sins". she weaves scenarios for each of her characters to grapple with. all of them are faced with choices that would affect their future, their families and their community.

from the first page to the last, i was drawn by the author's brilliant storytelling. how Miriam, Saul, Shelby and the rest of our protagonists managed to resolve these challenges makes for a fast-paced read.

Plain Proposal is touching, poignant and uplifting. this is a must read for those who enjoy Amish fiction and a great introduction for those who are curious about it. a glossary of Pennsylvania Dutch terms and mouth-watering Amish recipes are included.

one more thing, there is nothing preachy about the book. for me, this makes it all the more compelling and available for everyone regardless of race or creed.

Beth has once again written another compelling story in the Daughters of the Promise series. I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of her latest book and couldn't put it down. Her story kept me engaged from page one until the conclusion. Beth's writing of the Amish lifestyle, faith and love is incredible. It's as if you are right there with her characters. Once again we are brought into the lives that we have grown to love with some of our favorite characters coming back from Colorado. This story shows how the Amish are selfless and how they help each other out no matter what and put others in front of themselves. Their faith in God shows through in this story of trust, forgiveness, sacrifice and love. I truly enjoyed Shelby's journey as she found her place with God, the Amish lifestyle and community. It showed that no matter how far away from God we feel that He is always near and never leaves us. I vicariously lived through her wishing I had the opportunity to go live with Amish relatives where I could grow nearer to God and be surrounded by such warm loving people. There are twists and turns that you won't see coming in this story. It's definitely a page turner and I can't wait to see how the cliffhangers play out in future books.

With every book I read I feel more like a part of their family and can't wait until the next book to see what exciting things are happening for them. Another fabulous job Beth!

I enjoyed this book and finding out about old friends, but you do not need to have read the other books to read this one. This is the 6th book in the series including Seek Me With All Your Heart. This book is the story of Miriam Raber and Saul Fisher's romance. It is also the story of a lost girl, a distant cousin to the Raber family....Shelby Raber. I enjoyed the interaction and the closeness that Miriam and Shelby achieve. You can see God's hand in all that happens in the story. I loved the surprise ending! Forgiveness! I can't wait for more books in this series! I received a copy of this book from the publisher, I was not compensated in any way and was not expected to give a favorable review.

Except for a few things that I had an issue with, this book was quite good and entertaining to read. I didn't even know that this book came in a series. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to read it all the time. I enjoyed learning about the Amish religion and how they view things. Before this book, I didn't know anything about the Amish religion.

My two complaints is that Amish people believe things that is not true in the bible. They may think they are following the bible in all aspects but they are not.

My main issue was that in the character in this book was going through some rough times and thought it was because GOD was causing her suffering and that is simply not true. GOD is a loving GOD and you can find that in the bible. And unforeseen occurrences happen as well, and you can't blame GOD for all of that. In the bible, in the book of James, Chapter one and verse 13 it clearly states" When under trial, let no one say, "I am being tried by God." For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone."

My second issue was that the Amish people believe that GOD brings people to heaven when they die. That is simply not true. When you die, you are simply sleeping. There is no heaven or hell that you go to. Which can be found in the bible in ecclesiastics. In ecclesiastics it says in chapter 9, verse 5: "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all."

Other than that I truly enjoyed the book and would read another one by this author again. I just wish in the future people would actually read the bible and see what is honestly being said and not just twist the scriptures to fit their beliefs.

Plain Proposal is the 5th book in the Daughters of the Promise series, and I enjoyed it as much as the earlier books. Some of the characters were surprising, though: Miriam & Saul, an Amish couple considering leaving their community; Shelby, an Englischer coveting the Amish life; and Ivan, a shunned Amishman living with his English mistress. This eclectic mix of characters and plot twists which didn't go the way I expected, kept me up reading well into the wee hours of the morning over several nights. My only criticism is that everything wrapped up very neatly and very quickly at the end of the book, almost too perfectly to be believable. It also sounded like the end to the series, but I am hoping there will be more books in the Daughters of the Promise series, and that Beth just doesn't just switch over to the Land of Canaan series.

With thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson, for my free review copy.
