Kingsfriend5 Stars Out Of 5Hymnology 101July 20, 2017KingsfriendQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0In the Mr. Pipes series, Mr. Bond gives us a wonderful history of our Christian hymnody. Though one may feel that he is biased towards the old hymns and less favorable towards more contemporary music, he certainly makes an excellent case for it. All people in the church should sit up and take a concerted look at just what our hymns mean and why they are still so very important today. We read the books as a family but they would also make an excellent book study in churches, youth groups, etc. As a church musician myself I long for the coming generations to know that by putting our hymnals away in the pews and staring at the "screen" we are doing a serious dis-service to our Church's future.
Charly4 Stars Out Of 5A good intro to HymnologyJanuary 30, 2015CharlyQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4As a writer, I find the storying line a little ridiculous. The main characters are two super human kids that not only have wonderful manners, but super human ability in all important school subjects. The writer's style is a bit over the top. BUT he does a great job at telling the stories of the hymn writers in an interesting way, really making you care about them. And, apparently, he's from a town that's about 30 min. away from me, cool!
Overall, a great, useful tool for teaching kids about the old hymn writers and hymns, writer's petty issues aside ;)

We have learned a great deal about the history of many hymns and hymn writers, intermingled with a wonderful storyline. We've been encouraged by the stories of early Christians and the difficulties they faced as they stood by their faith. This is a terrific book, enjoyed by young (12 yo) and old during our read-a-loud time.
Bach5 Stars Out Of 5December 11, 2007BachAn excellent book (and series). My children (daughter and son) ages 12 and 7 enjoyed this book very much and were so excited that there were more in the series. God is truly glorified in this book.
