Tell us a little about yourself.  I am CEO of Lutheran Social Services - a $70 million organization that serves the children, elderly and the poor. I have also served as a corporate attorney, political consultant, and university administrator. I currently serve on the board of a Fortune 500 company and chair an international religious nonprofit organization.

What was your motivation behind this project?  A year ago I wrote a book titled, Executive Values: A Christian Approach to Organizational Leadership - which explores the causal connection between adhering to one's values and organizational success. As I traveled across the country speaking about Executive Values I heard many stories from a diverse group of people about their own lives. These conversations can roughly be categorized in two themes. The first were people like Christian Harrison, a former federal prosecutor in East Texas who successfully prosecuted hundreds of politicians, mayors, county leaders, judges and the like. What depressed him was that when reading the sentencing reports which both sides prepare to help the judge set the proper punishment, almost every convicted individual was a pillar of the community - a deacon, elder, or Sunday school teacher. What they taught and learned on Sunday they simply failed to live out the rest of the week. The second group of people were like you and me, struggling to find an appropriate framework to live our lives 24/7. We talked about how difficult it is to balance our lives, strategies to make our families our priority, how to best serve our congregation, community and family. What we also discussed was whether or not the data that applies to organizational success could also be used as a framework as we live out our own personal lives at home, in our congregation, in our community and at work. It was these types of conversations that led me to research, write about, and rediscover the relationship between one's ethical behavior and one's health. To my amazement, not only is there Biblical instruction on this topic (which we all intuitively know but sometimes choose to ignore) but the medical and empirical evidence also overwhelmingly substantiates and corroborates God's word. The end result is a book titled, Personal Values: God's Game Plan For Life.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  It is my prayer that Personal Values will provide the reader with a framework for living a healthy life of wholeness utilizing our mind, body and spirit in serving others. As the medical evidence demonstrates, by serving others and integrating our Christian principles into our daily lives, we will in the process also serve ourselves.
