Publisher's Description

Your body is an instrument.

No, it’s not a flute, or a guitar (I hope).

It is a sacred and original design by a master craftsman with a specific plan and purpose.

That’s a pretty big deal.

From head to foot, the way you view your body is directly connected to how you serve God. Seriously. From the thoughts you think to the steps you take, every part of you is linked to the divine.

Perhaps you are struggling with your body image or are trying to make sense of why God made you as you are. Maybe you are looking for new ways to understand Scripture or to love God more fully. Either way, this book will take you on a thoughtful, funny, and spirit-filled exploration of the way you were designed and will help you better honor the Creator by learning to value his perfectly unique creation (yourself!).

Annie is a huge fan of singer/songwriters, burritos, the Internet, her community of friends, and sports of all kinds.

I cannot actually review the whole book because the first chapter was so disappointing that I did not finish it. It came highly recommended both online and from others, but it left me curious as to how it got past the editing department and a Biblical perspective? Page 37 and 38, subtitled, Work on what you can, includes a terrible list mis-prioritizes the things that matter to God by looking at the external by plucking eyebrows and wearing jewelry and make up.

I am not saying that these things are to be avoided but honestly, they are not the starting place either. And the suggestion of what to do is unnecessary to feel good about oneself; further, how many parents of young teens would be in agreement? the ones in our youth ministry would not!

I discussed this with the other female leaders on our staff and the volunteer leadership. They too were disgusted and we went with a different study for our students. It's too bad since she has other good books.

You will hardly find me with a non-fiction book. I don't like reading them, I disagree with most of them, and I think fiction is the bee's knees.

But Ms. Downs has changed my opinion. This once. ;)

Ms. Downs brings us a book all about learning to love ourselves and how to praise God with our bodies. My expectations were set. I was ready to disagree. But I was happily disappointed. Instead, I was smiling and laughing at Ms. Down's down-to-earth writing and I was thinking through everything she said. I loved the first two chapters so much I corralled my cousin Tabitha into reading through the book with me!

Through the book, Ms. Downs discusses mind, eyes, ears, mouth, shoulders, heart, hands, stomach, knees, and lastly feet. At the end of every chapter she's formed little "activities" which include Bible verses to read, words to look up in the dictionary, and things to think on. I accepted all her advice at the end of each chapter and preformed some (sadly not all, but I will go back and do them!) of the "activities".

To conclude, Ms. Downs makes you feel like you're her best friend. She shares stories from her personal life, recipes which can be found in the Appendix, and gives solid advice. I highly, highly recommend this book to every teenage girl.

I received this book from Zondervan's Good Teen Reads in return for an honest review. Thanks!

With her slightly corny, offbeat sense of humor, the author draws you in and makes you won't to hear what this silly gal has to say. She addresses the insecurity and self-doubt that every girl faces, then gives practical advice about how to shift your way of thinking and acting in order to reflect the value God places on you.

Each chapter focuses on a different part of the body, explaining the significance of this part. How does it reflect the beauty God put in you? How can you guard that specific part and use it to glorify God? Some are obvious, such as the eyes, the ears, and the heart. But what about the shoulders? The knees? The stomach?

"Chew on This" at the end of each chapter provides scriptures to look up, questions to think through, and thoughts to journal. An appendix with recipes and lists for random things Annie has mentioned within the chapters, such as onion soup, ends a quirky but very real, very relevant book.

I would definitely recommend it for teen girls, although the advice and truths apply to those of us who are a bit older, as well. :) For more details, see my blog review of this book, at
