Ann Spangler's The Peace God Promises was born out of a desire that so many of us share: lasting, immovable, unshakeable peace. By exploring the meaning of 'shalom' from Jewish tradition, and adopting Amish perspectives on simplicity and rest, Spangler presents an attainable, accessible and sustainable method for experiencing God's peace regardless of our circumstances. There is nothing on this earth quite like the peace of Christ. The Peace God Promises will encourage you, help you find rest, and calm your spirit through experiencing His presence and adding shalom to your life. Are there any among us who don't long for this?

juliea3 Stars Out Of 5great topic, average bookNovember 18, 2011julieaQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3Wow, that is quite a product description the publisher has written! Being interested to learn more about Jewish shalom and Amish simplicity, as promised by the publisher, I eagerly delved into this book.
As is often the case, however, the book did not quite live up to the expectation created by the description. Sure, shalom and simplicity were mentioned, but Spangler explored neither one to a depth that drew me in. Those very important concepts faded into the "just another thought in the chapter" shadows.
That's not to say The Peace God Promises doesn't have great stories, thought-provoking study questions, and an important message. It has all those things. But despite the fact that Peace had me feeling very convicted at different moments, it lacked the punch to help me convert that conviction into life-changing action. I found it very easy to close the book at the end of each chapter and return to life as usual. In that sense, there's truly nothing to set this book apart from the myriad of other books on the same topic.
As a side note, here are several books that I couldn't just close and walk away from, but which have made a lasting impact:
Not a Fan, Kyle Idleman
The Cause Within You, Matthew Barnett
Money Secrets of the Amish, Lorilee Cracker
I received this book free from Zondervan for the purpose of providing my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review.
