Tell us a little about yourself. I am a wife and mother of 3 grown children. I taught for 10 years in Christian schools in Louisiana, Alabama and Texas. I love teaching, being in nature, and spinning wool from my sheep into yarn I can knit or weave.
What was your motivation behind this project? In 2008, I fulfilled my life long desire to have opportunity to gain a first hand understanding of the sheep and shepherd analogies in scripture, by getting my foundation flock of sheep, which I still raise today. What my sheep taught me about knowing Jesus as my "shepherd", inspired this book and several others I am working on.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope folks of all ages will gain from this book a deeper understanding of what it means to know and follow Jesus through all circumstances of life: the hills, the valleys, the green places and the hard places, and the depth of His attention to and care for us through it all.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? By working on this project, I was personally impacted by seeing God's faithfulness to provide for the execution of His own plans. Sometimes we can get frustrated thinking we are trying to do something "for" God, just hoping it can come together and "work". Then you realize it really was His own idea all along, and He always provides for and finishes the work He starts. I just got the blessing of getting to participate. I follow, He leads, so the burden on me is only to follow His lead, not to "make it work".
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? As a child, my favorite authors were L. Frank Baum, Laura Ingales Wilder and C. S. Lewis. Baum (The Wizard of Oz series) showed me that even children's fantasy books can make commentary on real life and the scope of human nature. Wilder (Little House in the Prairie series) taught me anyone's everyday life is a strange, exciting adventure to those who live differently. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia) showed me very deep, timeless, spiritual truth can be profoundly communicated in allogory. I love how real truth and meaning do not go out of style, but live on. I love that books well written, carry appeal to all ages, because they have the ability to speak on many levels, such that they should be re-read at every age throughout life. Based on the feedback I have had from adults who have read this book so far, I believe I have succeeded in accomplishing that here. This seems to be a book one reads with one's heart.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I based the details about shepherding the sheep on my experiences of learning to shepherd them in Louisiana, USA. However, every shepherd has different preferences, habits and methods based on where he or she lives, (because different environments create different circumstances), and based upon his or her goals for their own flock. I am working on creating a webpage that provides free downloads to supplement the book, and free materials for teaching the book to children at home or in a classroom setting. Visit the website listed on the back of the book. I will continue to add to it over time. The English version of Pasto Verde, Aquas de Reposo, is Green Grass, Still Waters: Woolfred Lamb Explains Psalm 23.
