God has given you the responsibility to pass your faith to the next generation. When you speak to your children about God, pray for them, and encourage them on their spiritual journey, you prepare them to live a life of enduring faith and blessings.
"In our walk with God, the passing of the blessings is not a suggestion," writes author Bishop Kenneth Ulmer. "It's a command, a mandate to those who have been blessed. And the blessing is not only to be passed to your children, but also to your children's children."
It is more important than ever to train up new followers of Christ. Though sin has become an accepted part of our culture, it is possible to break the cycle of sin passed down from previous generations and replace it with blessings. "If you want to have a positive impact," says Bishop Ulmer, "tell the story." Passing the Generation Blessing offers practical and powerful ways to speak blessings over your family so all can hear.

The first thing that went through my mind when Bishop Ulmer asked me to write this is that I'm too young to be writing a foreword in a book about passing the baton to the next generation. Then I realized maybe that is just ego, maybe that's just a part of me that wants to hold on to yesteryear, a part of me that I should let go of so that I can grab hold of all the new potential inside of me. Embracing the ideas in this book requires unselfishness and a willingness to prepare yourself so you can help others prepare. This book is about the seasons when your life was damaged. And about the actions that were taken to repair those damages, to make it to the next season, and to pay the lessons forward so the next generation wouldn't have to experience the trials and tribulations that you did.
I'm a grandfather. Some might say a young grandfather, but that is beside the point. There are younger generations within and outside of my lineage that deserve to benefit from the lessons I've learned. And the lessons that all of us experienced folks have learned. Bishop Ulmer has helped guide my life. He has imparted and shared wisdom with me for years -- Sunday through Monday. I've learned to put aside my ego, I've learned to drop the façade and ask for help, and this book is definitely going to be even more helpful.
Ask yourself this question: Are you willing to step aside and take a back seat in order to bless the younger generations with the wisdom, insight, and experience you've gained? Or are you going to hold on to that experience because of fear and deny yourself entry into your next level of greatness? Look at passing the generation blessing as if it were an already lit candle, and you have the opportunity to share its flame with as many brand-new unlit candles as possible. A lit candle maintains its flame, losing nothing but creating more light, when we light the other candles around us. That's what love does. It gives, it shares, it creates more light.
That's what God said: Let there be light. So the principles in this book, the stories in this book, are a challenge to you and me. Though it may remind us of some of the foolish things we have done, this book will also inspire us and future generations to make wise decisions moving forward. It will embolden us to live out our own personal stories to the fullest. Can you handle that idea? Or are you going to let the past hold your future hostage?
Future generations need us, and we need them. Future generations should inform our decisions today, because what we do today informs the future generations. So embrace the wisdom, ideas, and concepts in this book. They say fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me -- but what if you are just fooling yourself? Here's a one-word answer: Don't! This book will help you see the truth.
My grandmother used to say if a task is once begun, never leave it till it's done, be thy labor great or small, do it well or not at all. I suggest you do it well. Read, absorb, and enjoy passing the generation blessing.
