Parenting is Heart work
December 21, 2014
Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller designed this book to help you guide and direct your approach to raising your kids to connect with their heart, rather than just correcting your children and moving on. The book is separated into four parts:
1) Understanding the Heart
2) Connecting with your child's heart
3) Working out Heart Change
4) Touching your child's heart
Each part begins with a Heart story from the Bible and then gives examples of real life instances on how a problem can be addressed, both without reaching the heart and reaching the heart. Understanding that the parents need to look at their own hearts first before trying to address change in their child's heart is a major focus of the book. I'll leave it up to you to read the book to find out the three ways to touch your child's heart - I promise they are game changers in how you will approach parenting and correcting your children.
This book is a great starting point for parents wanting to biblically train up their children. It goes beyond behavior modification to looking into what is actually in the heart. I feel that there could have been more scriptures for giving the child reproof and encouragement. I sometimes feel a little lost when I'm trying to explain to my children why their heart is not in the right spot. Overall the book pointed me in the right direction and I would recommend it to others.
What a great tool for parents! The authors practical approach recognizes the uniqueness of each child. It guides parents in going beyond modifying behavior to intentionally reaching a childs heart to faciliate change. Parenting is Heart Work is filled with real-life examples as well as practical suggestions for parents of children of every age. Turansky and Millers approach is gentle, loving, and practical.
