RightStart Math

RightStart Mathematics is a hands-on and visually-based program that stresses understanding and problem solving. The primary learning tool is the AL abacus, which children use to visualize concepts and strategies for memorizing basic facts. Practice is provided through Math Card Games, which provide interesting and varied repetition needed for fluency. Standards-based and comprehensive, this Kindergarten to Grade 4 program is formatted in daily lessons with detailed instructions for both classroom and homeschool.

Full program features include:

• The AL abacus, grouped in fives and tens, encourages visualizing quantities and operations

• Students use a minimum amount of counting, which is not used to find sums or remainders

• Students are taught value naming of tens and ones; for example, referring to 23 as 2-ten 3
• The part-part-whole model is used for integrating addition and subtraction and solving problems
• Two-digit addition and subtraction is done mentally
• Four-digit addition is taught in first grade and 4-digit subtraction in second grade
• Problem-solving and reasoning is stressed throughout
• Practice for mastering strategies and facts is provided through games
• Geometry introduced in Levels A-B and continued with drawing boards in Levels C-E

You’ll notice that there are two editions available below, the 1st edition (RS1) and the 2nd Edition (RS2).

The new Second Edition has the same award-winning and innovative approach to teaching mathematics as the first edition. New approaches and techniques have been implemented, and the second-edition lessons and worksheets are in an easier-to-teach format that incorporates updated research and more games, and which continues to advance and develop the conceptual understanding of critical math concepts.

The Second Edition utilizes almost the same materials as the first edition; however, the order and use may change, therefore the supplies needed will change.

Because the Second Edition is a complete rewrite, the new RS2 material cannot be used with the first RS1 edition; topics are presented in different orders and some subjects are presented in a totally new manner.

Both lines are also organized differently.

The 1st editions have starter kits that include the lessons, worksheets, and manipulatives together, with the worksheets sold-separately.

The 2nd editions have “book bundles” that include the lessons and worksheets; the manipulatives are sold-separately in the RS2 Math Manipulative kit (which includes the manipulatives needed for every level, and thus only needs to be purchased once). Second Edition additional worksheets are still also sold-separately.
