Miquon Math

Miquon Math is a hands-on math curriculum for Grades 1-3 that helps children actively explore math concepts through movement and doing.

The entire program is comprised of six student books (two for each grade) and three teacher support books (each sold-separately). Cuisenaire rods (sold-separately) are also required to use this program, and provide a physical and visual connection to math concepts.

The Orange Book is the first book for first grade (it is followed by the Red Book [not included] as the second half of first grade). It includes a number of "lab sheets"- -workbook pages that teach math through creative exploration using hands-on manipulatives. The Miquon Math Lab Sheet Annotations book contains the specific instructions and directions for using the lab sheets in the student books (sold-separately). Designed as the primary, daily, teaching companion, each topic is introduced by a discussion of the mathematics underlying the children's work along with teaching suggestions and anecdotes.

This helpful manual contains a complete set of the 650 (reduced-size) student lab sheets with intervening text that indicates objectives and ways in which the students may use them. Preliminary activities, teaching suggestions, and follow-up activities are included for many of the lab sheets. The annotations provide questions that the teacher can ask to reinforce the concepts underlying the problems on the sheets; the text also suggests activities for practice in applying those concepts. Where the procedures and objectives are apparent at a glance, lab sheets are annotated.

Notes to Teachers, written by Miquon Math author Lore Rasmussen, explores the philosophy behind Miquon Math and the idea of a "math lab." She addresses questions such as:

• "What does the teacher do?"
• "Doesn't individualized work lead to chaos in the classroom?"
• "When should the teacher move on to a new topic?"
• "Should the teacher's goal be 100% correct responses?"

Six appendices cover the stages of mathematical development, Cuisenaire rods, children's errors, some sample observations from the children, materials for the classroom math lab, and books and guides to stretch the imagination. 54 pages, paperback.

The Miquon Math First Grade Diary is a daily log of the progress made by 20 children in Lore Rasmussen's classroom, as kept by her assistant. Originally kept as a case history to help refine methods and procedures, it includes lists of games, materials, sequences of developmental activities, and children's responses and insights into mathematical concepts. The learning experiences of the children throughout the school year, including their successes and their failures, are also included. A great insight into classroom methods and a great volume of ideas to try!
