The Last of the Mohicans
Angered by the values of his materialistic society, Hawkeye (Natty Bumppo) lives apart from other white men, sharing the solitude and sublimity of the wilderness with his Mohican Indian friend, Chingachgook. But the savageries of the French and Indian War force them out of exile, and they agree to guide two sisters in search of their father through hostile Indian country.
Tragic, fast-pased, and stocked with elements of a classic frontier adventure--massacres and raids, innocent settlers, hardened soldiers, renegade Indians, and a doomed love affair.
The deadly crack of a long rifle and the piercing cries of Indians on the warpath shatter the serenity of beautiful Lake Glimmerglass. Danger has invaded the vast forests of upper New York State as Deerslayer and his loyal Mohigan friend Chingachgook attempt the daring rescue of an Indian maiden imprisoned in a Huron camp. Soon they are caught in the crossfire between a cunning enemy and two white bounty hunters who mercilessly kill for profit.

Epic of the American frontier follows the exploits of the scout Natty Bumppo, "Leatherstocking". -The Pioneers-as an aged hunter caught up in the struggle to determine what kind of civilization will replace the vanishing wilderness. -The Last of the Mohicans-is an adventure story about a daring rescue while the French threaten to invade the American colonies. -The Prairie-Natty, in his eighties, is driven to refuge on the Great Plains, where Sioux, Pawnee, outlaw whites, and members of the Lewis and Clark expedition enact a fateful drama.
The Pathfinder, (or The Inland Sea) where, on the Great Lakes during the Seven Years War, the French and their Indian allies are plotting a treacherous ambush. The Deerslayer brings the saga full circle to follow young Natty on his first warpath.
The fourth novel in The Leatherstocking Tales is a "romance," the story of Natty Bumppo's unsuccessful courtship of a young woman during the French and Indian War.
The final novel in Cooper's epic, The Prairie depicts Natty Bumppo at the end of his life, still desplaying his indomitable strength and dignity.
The first of The Leatherstocking Tales introduces the mythical hero Natty Bumppo in a portrait that contrasts the natural codes of Bumppo to the rigid legal and social structures of a new settlement.
Cooper's novel centers on Harry Birch, a common man wrongly suspected by well-born Patriots of being a spy for the British. Even George Washington, who supports Birch, misreads the man, and when Washington offers him payment for information vital to the Patriot's cause, Birch scorns the money and asserts that his actions were motivated not by financial reward, but by his devotion to the fight for independence.
