About the Recipe for Reading Program from EPS

Recipe for Reading from EPS is a research-based, multisensory, phonics-based reading curriculum that features intervention strategies for struggling readers in grades K-6 or beginning readers in grades K-3. It can be used as a core reading program or as a supplement; it is an Orton-Gillingham based program and was initially developed for use with dyslexic students. Children who progress through the program will learn consonant sounds, digraphs, consonant blends, diphthongs, short/long vowels, inflectional endings, suffixes, and spelling rules. Incorporating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques, this program is ideal for differentiated instruction.

The program is centered on the Recipe for Reading Teacher’s Manual. It contains a series of structured lessons that cover the entire Recipe for Reading program. The material is presented in a flexible format, allowing teachers to differentiate instruction depending on the specific needs of their students. It contains instructions for all the Student Workbooks (1-8), Sound Cards, and The Alphabet Series readers.

The eight student workbooks are non-reproducible, consumable, and sold individually. There are 4 to 8 practice pages for each skill, and activities include phonemic awareness, encoding and decoding, drawing exercises, sentence completions, matching sentences to pictures, identifying words that feature certain phonetic features, and other exercises. Each workbook covers a section of lessons from the teacher manual.

The Alphabet Series is a series of readers which can be purchased in three sets of 18 (covering 1/3 of the program in each volume), or together in the Alphabet Series Starter Set, which includes all 39 workbooks and covers the length of the curriculum. Stories increase in difficulty, and help students practice target words, sounds, sight words, and build up comprehension skills while reading motivating, engaging stories. Word lists, fluency sentences, and comprehension questions, as well as black-and-white illustrations, are also included, along with a Scope & Sequence.

The Sound Cards and Affix & Root Cards are supplemental resources designed for review and reinforcement.

The Recipe for Reading Starter Kit includes the teacher's manual as well as a set of 50 sequence charts and 100 sheets of writing paper (25 each of 4 different line-sizes). The latter two resources are not available for separate purchase at Christianbook.com.
