This introductory pamphlet to both strands in the Starting Comprehension series provides instructors and parents with essential information on how to determine which workbook strand, Starting Phonetically or Starting Visually, to use for a student, by giving checklists of reading-style characteristics and test patterns for different types of readers. Once a workbook strand is chosen, the Teacher's Guide provides enrichment activities, teaching tips for the comprehension activities, lists of phonetic and grammatic elements used in the workbooks, information on how to integrate the series into student groups, and supporting research and articles. 6 pages, softcover.

The Starting Phonetically series is designed for students who learn to read most easily through the Phonetic-Analytic method, which uses letter-sound patterns and phonetic rules. Most of the featured vocabulary is structured to promote reading for meaning. The four types of exercises will have students responding to questions to develop comprehension skills. Vocabulary exercises introduce words used in the workbook. Literal Comprehension questions test understanding of factual details using yes/no answers and internal logic. Inferential Comprehension questions assess the student's ability to recognize the main idea of a selection. Organizational Comprehension questions require the student to organize the information in a passage in different ways to show understanding. The Starting Visually series is designed for students who learn to read most easily through the Visual-Gestalt method, which uses illustrations and word meanings. Most of the featured vocabulary is consists of words that are easily remembered as whole objects, such as action verbs, concrete nouns, and tangible adjectives. More abstract words, such as pronouns and prepositions, are introduced later. The four types of exercises will have students responding to questions to develop comprehension skills.
