Alpha-Phonics is an effective, step-by-step program that has taught countless homeschooled children to read, including older struggling readers, dyslexic students, and others. As a stand-alone program or supplement, Alpha-Phonics' systematic phonetic approach will help students build a logical framework for English reading.
Students begin by learning short vowels and consonants, before moving on to consonant blends that teach final blends first, and then initial blends. Finally, students learn long vowels along with the many forms in which they occur. Moving from simple to complex through practice and drill exercises, students will build competency and skill, increasing self-confidence.
The alphabet is taught visually and orally through having children repeat the letters as the teacher points to them, as well as through the integration of kinesthetic activities. The black-and-white hand-lettered pages are designed to teach children with minimal distraction.
The front of this book contains the hand-printed lists of words, without commentary. A section with short lesson instructions (approximately 1-7 sentences) is provided for each lesson in the back. An order of lessons, list of common English spelling forms, and pre-reading alphabet exercises are also included. 171 pages, softcover. Grade K & up.
This CD-ROM edition of Samuel Blumenfeld's Alpha Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers combines every aspect of Alpha Phonics with the advantages of a computer-based course. Each of the 128 lessons in the book are reproduced on the CD-ROM exactly as they appear in the book; both spoken and printed instructions are included, and lessons do not require use of the keyboard-just the mouse! A Teacher/Student screen includes a sidebar for navigation and instructions and allows you to go to any lesson in the program; Student screens feature the lesson in extra large type without any distractions.
Accompanying Alpha-Phonics, A Primer for Beginning Readers, this two CD set replaces the older audiocassette tapes. Beginning with a 30-minute history of our alphabetic language, how phonics works, and how to teach anyone to read using Alpha-Phonics, a lesson-by-lesson reading is given of all 128 lessons by author Samuel Blumenfeld. Parents can ensure they're pronouncing each word correctly, since enough of the words and all 44 speech sounds in Alpha-Phonics are pronounced here for the teacher. Sounds are introduced systematically, from the most simple to the most complex for clear, simple teaching. 2 CD-ROMs for use on any CD-ROM player or computer with CD-ROM Drive.
