Level 1
This Daily Spelling Practice Level 1 Student Workbook features exercises to support the words taught through the Daily Spelling Practice Level 1 Teacher's Guide (sold-separately). Organized by day (following a 5-day schedule), pages include blanks where students can write the words dictated by the teacher; work with syllables; complete sentences or exercises with the correct word; and identify the correctly/incorrectly spelled word. Fridays are reserved for spelling assessments. Twenty-five different spelling "keys" (one per week) are provided, along with five review weeks.
Daily Spelling Practice teaches students to spell by focusing on sound keys, addressing prefixes and suffixes, working with syllables, and providing practice with spelling "confusables" and rule-breaking memory words. Level 1 "key" words include: H(a)t, t(e)n, (pl)an, s(ee)m, (dr)ip, (br)oom, and others.
In order to begin Level I, students must know the sound of each individual letter and have some reading experience; this can result in a schedule of beginning Level 1 in Grade 2, but the series can be started even as late as 5th or 6th grade. As this is a course that builds sequential knowledge, students should advance through all four levels; older students in middle and high school may wish to consider the High School Intensive Daily Spelling Practice course (all 180 lessons) in lieu of the four-level series.
This Daily Spelling Practice Level 1 Teacher's Guide includes an overview and explanation of the course, a pretest/posttest, sample student and overhead pages, answer keys (handwritten answers overlaid on student pages), suggested Friday assessment lists, and a scope and sequence.
