The First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind series begins with two complete grammar texts (previously one volume), each of which covers a single year. Dictation, narration, picture study, and other classical techniques are used to develop the student's language ability. Each step-by-step lesson leads parents through the simple oral and written projects that build reading, writing, spelling, storytelling, and comprehension skills. Parents can choose to continue the series with two additional levels (Level 3 & 4) both of which include a separate teacher's edition and student workbook (unlike Levels 1 & 2). These latter levels are a complete writing & grammar curriculum, and use four different strands of teaching to impart grammar, punctuation, usage and writing skills, while students learn through memorization, copywork, dictation, narration and grammatical concepts.

Books on Classical Education

The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home is a classic work on homeschooling pedagogy and methodology that will teach you, chapter-by-chapter, how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool to high school. Whether you're a brand-new homeschool parent or simply looking to change up your routine, you'll benefit from learning more about what a classical education has to offer. The Prologue outlines what a classical education and provides a model drawn from the experiences of both authors. Divided between the stages of early education (K-4), middle school (5-8) and high school, chapters offer an overview of how to teach all the major subjects, including literature, writing, grammar, history, science, math, Latin, modern languages, art, music, debate, and more. Lists of recommended resources, recommended schedules, teaching tips, sample checklists, and sample dialogue is integrated throughout the book for an eminently practical guide.

816 pages, hardcover with dust jacket. 4th Edition.

Have you lost the art of reading for pleasure? Are there books you know you should read but haven't because they seem too daunting? In The Well-Educated Mind, Susan Wise Bauer provides a welcome and encouraging antidote to the distractions of our age, electronic and otherwise. In her previous book, The Well-Trained Mind, the author provided a road map of classical education for parents wishing to home-school their children, and that book is now the premier resource for home-schoolers. In this new book, Bauer takes the same elements and techniques and adapts them to the use of adult readers who want both enjoyment and self-improvement from the time they spend reading.

The Well-Educated Mind offers brief, entertaining histories of five literary genre - fiction, autobiography, history, drama, and poetry - accompanied by detailed instructions on how to read each type. The annotated lists at the end of each chapter - ranging from Cervantes to A.S. Byatt, Herodotus to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich - preview recommended reading and encourage readers to make vital connections between ancient traditions and contemporary writing.

The Well-Educated Mind reassures those readers who worry that they read too slowly or with below-average comprehension. If you can understand a daily newspaper, there's no reason you can't read and enjoy Shakespeare's Sonnets or Jane Eyre. But no one should attempt to read the "Great Books" without a guide and a plan. Susan Wise Bauer will show you how to allocate time to your reading on a regular basis; how to master a difficult argument; how to make personal and literary judgments about what you read; how to appreciate the resonant links among texts within a genre - what does Anna Karenina owe to Madame Bovary? - and also between genres. Followed carefully, the advice in The Well-Educated Mind will restore and expand the pleasure of the written word. 432 indexed pages, hardcover with dust jacket.

What does it mean to read a book? What does "reading deeply" look like?

In The Well-Educated Mind Susan Wise Bauer provides a guide not only on how to read, but what to read. The Well-Educated Mind offers a brief and entertaining introduction to six literary genres - fiction, autobiography, history, drama, science, and poetry - including a history of the genre and detailed instructions on how to read it. The annotated, chronological lists at the end of each chapter - ranging from Cervantes to A.S. Byatt, Herodotus to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich - preview recommended reading and encourage readers to make vital connections between ancient traditions and contemporary writing.

This fourth edition has been expanded and updated to include works from the 21st century, additional guides and helps, and a new chapter on reading the most essential science texts, such as those written by Aristotle, Galileo, and Hawking.

511 indexed pages, hardcover with dust jacket. Updated & Expanded Edition.

The Story of Science

Susan Wise Bauer's The Story of Science: From the Writings of Aristotle to the Big Bang Theory is organized into parts: the beginning of science, the beginning of the scientific method, and the three major fields: the earth, life, and the cosmos. Focusing on science writing rather than the biographies of scientists through the centuries, this riveting foray into the great works of science is a fantastic way to trace the development of science and the way science has been presented and received. Each chapter recommends one or more classic books and provides an account of the discovery, a sketch of the writer, and an explanation of the main issues and concepts. 320 pages, hardcover.
