The Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind curriculum is a thorough, easy-to-use grammar program that will bring students from the early stages of basic definitions through advanced sentence structure and analysis. Picking up where the First Language Lessons series left off, this course will give students the grammar skills needed to write and speak well.

This set includes the Purple Workbook, the Purple Workbook Key, the Core Instructor Text and the Comprehensive Handbook of Rules. Parents go through the dialogue, rules, and examples in the Core Instructor Text while students follow along in the Workbook. The Comprehensive Handbook of Rules covers all the rules along with repeated examples and will become the student's guide to writing.

The purple workbook features numbered lessons that briefly re-state the primary rule or rules being taught before diving into a variety of exercises that will carefully build understanding. Charts, graphics, and examples are integrated as needed, and regular review is incorporated throughout. Exercises often draw from literature, novels, histories, biographies, and science books to encourage students to see how the rules they're learning operate in real literature. This workbook covers one year of instruction.

The included purple workbook key makes grading easy. It includes exercises from the student workbook with the correct answers overlaid, explanations for the instructor, and guidance as to when the answers might be ambiguous.

The Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Core Instructor Text includes fully scripted dialogue for the teacher (with answers the students are supposed to give in italics), all rules and examples, and teaching notes that explain any ambiguities and difficulties that might be encountered. This text covers four years of ins truction.

The Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind Comprehensive Handbook of Rules assembles all of the principles that govern the English language-from basic definitions ("A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea") through advanced sentence structure--into one handy reference work. Each rule is illustrated with examples drawn from great literature, along with classic and contemporary works of science, history, and mathematics. This resource is also designed to be used throughout the four years of this program.

This innovative program combines the three essential elements of language learning: understanding and memorizing rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of how those rules are used (descriptive instruction), and practice using those rules in exercises and in writing (practical experience).

This purple level can be used for Grade 5 & up. Covers one year of instruction.

This kit includes:

  • Student Workbook, 579 pages, softcover. Reproducible for in-family use only.

  • Student Workbook Key, 417 pages, softcover
  • Instructor Text for Years 1-4, 386 pages, softcover.
  • Handbook of Rules, 95 pages, indexed, hardcover

Please Note: You might receive a book that is identified as either the level 1 or the purple level; the content is identical. The levels were changed to "colors" from numerical order to reflect that the years can be done in any order. The publisher has planned four Workbooks for this curriculum. Each workbook contains the same rules and examples-but four completely different sets of exercises and assignments, allowing students to develop a wide-ranging knowledge of how the rules and examples are put to use in writing. As of May 2018, only the first purple level is available.
