This Apologia writing curriculum is a complete, writing-focused language arts program that integrates grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
Teaching students about sentence structure, the parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, and usage within the context of creating clear, engaging stories and essays, this program sets aside the traditional "personal/ expository/persuasive/narrative" divisions in favor of real-life writing assignments. Volume 1 focuses on introducing the parts of speech and how they function in a sentence, including: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections.
Thorough and systematic, six units and twenty-four modules are included, with lively and colorful lessons building on previously-taught concepts, skills, and terms. The easy-to-use, "all-in-one" Student Text and Workbook features an engaging tone that's written directly to the student. Each unit opener includes a focus on a Christian writer, unit overview, and rubric; units include models from professional writers for students to study and use as an inspiration for their own writing. Modules integrate clear, engaging instruction with sidebar notes and a variety of exercises.
Assignments cycle through four types of writing tasks:
- I Remember: assignments focused on the personal narrative
- I Imagine: creative writing assignments such as short stories, poetry, and novels
- I Investigate: research skills assignments
- I Think: tasks that teach opinion and argument writing, including persuasive and argument writing
Grades 4-8; can be used with children in different grades simultaneously with adjustment. Suggested schedule is for 128 days of work, which means this volume can be completed in 32 weeks working 4 days per week.
576 pages, spiralbound softcover. Glossary and appendices included. Non-reproducible and consumable. Scripture is from the ESV.

Apologia's Writers in Residence series for Grade 4 & up is a reading comprehension, literature, and vocabulary program that provides students with a biblical framework to think about words and communicate effectively in writing. Writers in Residence will help them tap into their creativity as they learn to capture their experiences and ideas in writing through a growing command of the English language.
Writers in Residence Volume 2: Journeyman features four units (each with four modules for 16 modules in total) that include a writing assignment and cover a range of language arts concepts in addition to the six traits of good writing and the writing process. These units are:
- Unit 1: "Investigate": includes "Into the Wild" science report writing assignment and covers MLA formatting, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism, interrogatives, and titles
- Unit 2: "I Think": includes "Making the Case" argument essay writing assignment and covers subjects, predicates, modifiers, connectors, subject complements, verb complements, direct objects, and indirect objects
- Unit 3: "I Remember": includes "Poetry Jam" poetry writing assignment and covers personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, possessive adjectives, antecedents, point of view, and punctuation
- Unit 4: "I Imagine": Includes "A Fantastical Tale of Extraordinary Exploits" fantastical tale writing assignment and covers reflexive pronouns, indefinite pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, agreement, and punctuation.
Thorough and systematic, the lively and colorful lessons build on previously-taught concepts, skills, and terms. This easy-to-use, "all-in-one" Student Text and Workbook features an engaging tone that's written directly to the student. Each unit opener includes a focus on a Christian writer and unit introduction with student rubric. Modules open with "writer's questions," a sneak peak at what students will learn in the module, a step-by-step list of what students will be working on for their writing assignment, and other helpful information. Modules are made up of multiple lessons; these lessons integrate clear, engaging instruction with sidebar notes, examples of student writing, and a variety of exercises.
This series is designed for students in Grade 4 & up. Students who begin Volume 2: Journeyman should understand the basic parts of speech and how they function in a sentence.
