I read some of the notes on the inside that are displayed here. But before I go any further I would like to first say that I am a fan of the RSV, especially the RSV-2CE (which is a little better). I would not mind a quality leather RSV like this, as the leather looks of quality. But the print is only a 10 point font for one. Secondly, the notes use a method that is not good. I'm getting the impression that the Babylonian Enuma Elish, not Genesis, is what has inspired the notes, assuming Genesis is speaking about the same thing, and as if God revealed Himself to the Babylonians in the same manner He did with the Jews. But God did not reveal Himself or His Word to the Babylonians. The Genesis account is not borrowed from the Enuma Elish. Sure, some records, like the Flood, will find a common place among other ancient nations. But the Genesis account tells us about the only ark that would have floated and survived the Flood while carrying out the task it was designed to do. The Babylonian ark, being 120x120x120 cubits, would not last. The weight of that ark would have sank at least some 60 cubits under water. The water pressure would slit the seams and all life would have perished in the Flood. So just by reading the notes I can tell it comes from liberal scholars. I love the RSV as a translation, but Catholics have yet to mak a good study Bible. Now the RSV Spiritual Warfare Bible is good! The only problem with that Bible is the glued spine. The Ignatius Bible is great but the notes also suffer in that Bible. There really isn't a good Catholic Bible out there. So if you buy an RSV, which is the best translation out there, comparable to the ESV, then you buy for the translation and not for the notes. For some of the notes in these Catholic Bibles are highly questionable.

Lastly, the notes say the firmament was a solid dome. I have spend months now refuting that lie and can debate this issue and win against any scholar in the world and win with the greatest of ease. The flat earth movement is not hard to refute if you know your Christian history and enough about linguistics to drive in the point. The New Strong's Concordance of the Bible also answers the lie that the firmament was a solid dome. It simply isn't true and there is ample proof that the firmament, or more properly the "expanse", was not a solid dome. The word dome don't appear don't appear anywhere in Genesis, When it comes to study Bibles you need to get Protestant Bibles. I wish the Catholics would start producing useful study Bibles but they never do.

Today on Snyders Soapbox we are going to take a look at a Bible for all the RSV and Apocrypha fans. The Apocrypha isnt my cup of tea, but I recognize there are some folks out there who would like to buy a well built Bible in this translation with the Apocrypha. This Bible from Oxford, is very well built. I wouldnt look at it as a premium Bible, but more as a work horse. The thing is built like a tank. Thats not to say it isnt an attractive looking Bible, it is. I would categorize this Bible as a daily use Study Bible. If you want to read the Apocrypha, and the notes that go along with this edition, this is probably the best option. Ill stick to my own flavor of commentaries. As a Reformed Baptist much of the notes in this edition are generalized for broader appeal.

It is covered in black genuine leather with a moderate grain and a perimeter groove. The leather is harder, and high gloss, leading me to think that it is pig skin leather. Pig skin leather holds up well, but is not as supple as other choices. It is also less expensive to use. It is case bound, and has a gold colored, hot-stamped, perimeter line around the inside cover. It has two yellow/gold ribbon markers, black and gold bands. The spine has the words, The New Oxford Annotated Bible at the top, With the Apocrypha Expanded Edition under that, then, Revised Standard Version and, Oxford at the bottom. The page edges are also hot stamped with gold colored foil. I really like the ribbons. Their color and material, are nice for a Bible with this low price. The spine is smyth sewn, flexible, and durable. I cant think of any reason why this Bible wouldnt hold up for a long time. The paper is thick, opaque, and the 10 pt. font of the main text, is sharp and clear. The notes are in 8 pt. font. This Bible is printed, and bound in South Korea. It is a quality edition at a good value price. It is laid out in a double column, paragraph format, with notes at the bottom. Each book has an introduction. It seems to be more of a study Bible, than a reference Bible, with all the helps that are in it. At the end of the day, if you are in the market for an RSV, with the Apocrypha, this is the only choice. It is well built, and priced to sell. It should last a long time, and serve you well.

RSV a delight to read and study

I just received my bible. It more than exveeds my expectations. The book introductions and voluminous notes are like a running Bible commentary. The notes present a solid theological perspective that is both orthodox, historically protestant and rigorously scholarly. The doctrinal persoective appears to be strongly evangelical like one would expect from Bruce Metzger. The RSV (this is not the NRSV) reads with historic elegance yet with updated pronouns in most cases retaining older pronouns in Psalms or references to God. It highly readable and yet majestic. The binding and finish is the best I have seen in years. I hope it will always stay in print, espescially in genuine leather. I just love this book from God to Oxford to us. Thank you OUP.
