Publisher's Description

At the base of every broken life, every dysfunctional relationship, every bad choice is a lie we believe. And at the root of every lie is fear. Fear of not having enough, fear of missing out, fear of being alone. The good news is, once we can identify and name our fears, we can defeat the lies that control us and live out the more abundant life that Christ promises us.

With sharp insight and deep compassion, Clayton King identifies the ten big lies we commonly believe, each rooted in the fear of losing something. He blows them apart, one by one, with God's truth, allowing readers to take back control of their hearts, minds, and actions. Covering such pervasive problems as loneliness, unforgiveness, shame, human suffering, self-image, sexual sin, and more, King shines a light on all those things that are holding us down and clears the way for the faith that sets us free.

Honestly I just wanted to read Overcome because I love Clayton. He is an incredible preacher, and a spiritual role model for me. But once I read that first chapter, I was fully involved. I had to reread, highlight, and underline. I took notes and prayed about certain subjects from the book. It was personal, and I felt like most of it was specifically written for me.

Each chapter dealt with a different lie that Satan throws at us, and how we can OVERCOME the lies with Scripture. Clayton uses personal stories, experiences, and quotes that deal with each chapter. After reading this book I felt closer with God, and more prepared to deal with the lies of sin, temptation, forgiveness, and so many other lies that people deal with every day. Read this book, pray through this book, and learn how to OVERCOME these lies. Clayton did a phenomenal job writing Overcome, and I will definitely be rereading it several times. It's a book that I will reference to a lot in the future, and I'm already starting to do so.

King wants readers to identify the lies we believe, those that form the basis of our choices, deal with them and then walk with new freedom in Christ. He helps us to see how the lies progress: infiltrate, insinuate, intimidate, re-create.

I did not find anything really new or enlightening in this book. King's suggestions are typical. "We overcome the lie by believing what God has told us and living according to the truth." (114) He suggests the human actions we need to do: hate it, starve it, outsmart it. He does say it it not just self-control but human effort rooted in the power of the Holy Spirit. Overcoming will take effort yet the fight is won by faith.

King does provide much good information about the lies we believe. He shares stories and lots of information, for example, about the disastrous consequences of destructive sexual habits. He suggests a battle plan to resist temptation. While the strength to do so comes from the Holy Spirit, we must make the initial decision to hate sin. "An attitude of complete intolerance is the only attitude that will work in the war against temptation." (134)

King admits that he has not conquered all that needs to be overcome. Writing this book was preaching to himself, he says. Overcoming is a life long journey requiring daily attention.

Those who have read other books on overcoming temptation and lies may not find anything new here. King has provided practical questions at the end of each chapter as well as space for writing. While the material in this book may not be new, the questions and space for writing do make it a book I recommend.

Food for thought: "Learn how to live in the victory Jesus won for you." (142)

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

In Overcome: Replacing the Lies That Hold Us Down with the Truths That Set Us Free, Clayton King introduces us to his personal efforts to overcome some of the most powerful lies that can hold us down and keep us from realizing the Truth of God's presence in our lives.

Here, Clayton has selected ten common and powerful lies that we allow ourselves to believe everyday - God is mad at me, I am unloved and alone, things will never get better, good people don't suffer, and more - and breaks each one down to show us how the lie works by infiltrating, insinuating, intimidating, and re-creating your reality.

Once we see how the lie works, through powerful real-life examples, Clayton shows us the Truth that each lie hides, and reveals how to uncover and reinforce that Truth in order to break the cycle of lies that we're stuck in.

I really appreciate Clayton's candid personal approach - he has no problem admitting his own weaknesses as encouraging for our journey. I also found the "Next Steps" reflection/journaling section at the end of each chapter to be helpful.

I'd recommend this book to any Christ follower who is having a hard time letting go of the lies that stand between them and their personal relationship with God. 5/5 stars.

Underneath every broken life, dysfunctional home, and addictive behavior is a lie that we have bought into. If we can identify the lie and replace it with the truth, we can not only have freedom but live a better life. That is the premise of pastor and author Clayton Kings latest offering, Overcome: Replacing the Lies that Hold Us Down with the Truths that Set Us Free.

In the book, the author identifies nine foundational lies that he believes hinders us from enjoying the life God created us to enjoy. He believes that each lie infiltrates our mind, insinuates something about us, intimidates us into believing it, and then recreates our reality. The author deals with such pervasive problems as loneliness, insecurity, unforgiveness, shame, self-esteem, sexual sin, addictive behaviors, and human suffering.

Some pastors and authors teach the Scriptures and illustrate their points with stories. Others tell stories and illustrate them with Bible verses. This book falls into the latter category. It is heavy on stories and principles and light on Bible teaching. It falls into the category of Bible-lite and Christian self-help books.

Disclosure: I received this book free from Baker Books through the Baker Books Bloggers www.bakerbooks.com/bakerbooksbloggers program. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.
