Do you struggle with worry or anxious thoughts on a regular basis? Does your mind get fixated on the same concern over and over? Do you know you should stop worrying but repeatedly fail to do so?
How to Overcome Worry presents a biblical and practical strategy for this exact problem. Dr. Winfred Neely, who has experienced his fair share of anxiety-inducing circumstances, walks you through Philippians 4:67 to help you:
- Understand the difference between concern and worry
- Use prayer as a means of grace to overcome worry
- Cultivate gratitude and thanksgiving as an antidote to worry
- Navigate changing seasons and circumstances without falling into worry
- Employ practical strategies for experiencing the peace of God
Worry is one of the top issues in our world today, even among Christians, and this concise and biblical approach will offer real solutions. In His Word, God tells us to stop worrying, pray about everything, and expect His peace. This is a true promise of Scripture, and this book will help you to lay hold of it.

Terry5 Stars Out Of 5A Great simple book to help with worry!July 26, 2017TerryQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Dr. Neely has written an excellent book that relies on a biblical foundation and methodology for overcoming worry. Perhaps the best part of the book is that Dr. Neely is willing to acknowledge that which many of us are not - Anxiety is a Choice! Never accusatory, Dr. Neely understands that we live in a world that is worry-driven. We live with menacing threats like terrorism, economic uncertainty, racial unrest, a breakdown of trust between law enforcement and the citizenry, gun violence, mass shootings, and more. However, Neely explains that we need to remember that we are to be in an intimate relationship with God and that when we are, habitual worry will vanish.
Neely provides a sure-fire way to maintain this intimacy. Do you know what it is? Prayer, of course! Neely defines and explains some components of prayer: Supplication, Thanksgiving, and Requests. He also gets very practical and provides his thoughts on biblical meditation, how to increase your prayer time, and Scripture to help along the way. This short book is equal parts powerful and practical. I highly recommend How to Overcome Worry by Dr. Winfred Neely.
I received acomplimentary copy of this book from Moody Publishers. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.
contemplativereflections4 Stars Out Of 5Book Review: How to Overcome WorryJuly 4, 2017contemplativereflectionsQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0In "How to Overcome Worry," Winfred Neely encourages those who are worried and anxious to find true and lasting peace in God alone. Neely argues that it is natural to be concerned about what matters to us but when we become fixated on these concerns we begin to doubt God's character and sovereignty. The author focuses on Philippians 4:6-7 to illustrate that the key to conquering worry is by submitting everything to God who in turn grants supernatural peace. The two primary methods by which we can experience such peace is by immersing ourselves in prayer and Scripture. The author states that we can let God know our needs through prayer, supplication, thanksgiving, and requests. Furthermore, by meditating on God's Word frequently, we gain comfort knowing that God is the One who controls and sustains us amid life's trials. Neely asserts that fervent, regular prayer and biblical meditation serve not only as buoys to carry us through turbulent waters but also as safeguards that fend off panic and disturbances that press against us daily. At the end of the book, there are three appendixes including a sample prayer, a list of Scriptural passages to combat worry, and a set of discussion questions for personal or group study.
I would gladly recommend this short book to those who need to be reminded of the grace and peace that is available to all those who put their faith in God. Neely helpfully points out that Christians already experience peace with God through the work of Jesus but we also need the constant peace of God in our lives. Our Christian faith not only secures our eternal destiny but also provides hope for us to weather the difficulties of life. Instead of using our own wisdom and strength to shoulder the anxieties that burden us, we can follow Christ's example in surrendering ourselves to our loving Father who can and will carry us through each challenge that we face.

Brianna5 Stars Out Of 5How to Overcome WorryJuly 2, 2017BriannaQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5Dont let the size of How to Overcome Worry fool you! Despite the books short length, Dr. Winfred Neely packs some powerful challenges into the pages. He incorporates personal examples into the text, but How to Overcome Worry is not merely 88 pages of story-telling.
How to Overcome Worry attracted me due to my own experiences with anxiety and depression. Throughout the book, Neely acknowledges the role of physiological components that contribute to anxiety. However, he places a strong emphasis on the spiritual components of the battle against anxiety. It is this component that is often overlooked, even amongst believers. Neelys argument is built upon a study of anxiety in Scripture and he delineates between healthy and unhealthy examples of being anxious. I appreciated the challenges in How to Overcome Worry; challenges that are often not explored in other books on worry and anxiety.
Finally, if readers choose to use How to Overcome Worry in a small group, Neely includes appendices with prayers, scriptures, and reflection questions.

HeidiMarie3 Stars Out Of 5How To Overcome WorryJune 18, 2017HeidiMarieQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3Everyone deals with worry and stress. It's part of human life, but it isn't a part of God's plan for our lives. In this books, Dr. Winfred Neely gives his advice for overcoming worry in a worry-filled and anxiety-creating world.
First of all, concern and care for others and ourselves is healthy and biblical. However, it becomes unhealthy when it turns into worry. This is because, not only is it detrimental to our physical health, but also to our spiritual health, as worry and anxiety are rooted in unbelief that God is taking care of things. While Neely notes that there is no on/off switch for worry, he gives a bunch of Bible verses and tips for working past your worry and being able to put all of your trust in God. Foremost, Neely stresses the importance of prayer. Bringing all of your concerns to God allows you to talk through the problems with Him, and be able to give the problems over to Him. Prayer is the key to conquering worry. Prayer is supposed to have an answer, and when we pray, we can expect peace from God.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the verses and advice Neely gives throughout. I ended up doing a ton of journaling and finding it to be really helpful. He used great metaphors and imagery to explain his concepts. Each chapter, as well as the end of the book, gave helpful verses, tips on how to put into practice the methods of stopping worry, guidance for prayer, recommended books, and questions for reflection and discussion. I have this book 3/5 stars.
