Outlive Your Life: You Were Made to Make a Difference is based on the premise that God has given this generation, our generation, everything we need to alter the course of human suffering. In 16 story-filled chapters Lucado first reminds ordinary Christians that the gospel is foundational to all their efforts. He then discusses opportunities and character qualities that effective Christians need to consider. A detailed study guide concludes the book.My first reaction to this book was negative. I disagree with the premise that our generation has everything we need to alter the course of human suffering. Much suffering is beyond our ability to help, although some, such as hunger and loneliness can be significantly reduced. I also question whether it should be our goal to try to repeat the early church experience. And does the church really exist to open doors, break walls, and restore relationships? The Lord Jesus warned that following Him may, in fact, have the opposite effect.Despite these issues, however, Outlive Your Life can encourage us to love your neighbor as yourself. It covers prayer, hypocrisy, compassion, acceptance, hospitality, and more, in stories that we can all relate to. The study guide gives many practical suggestions for a life of service.Through Lucados gripping stories, Outlive Your Life could encourage and empower Christians to serve the suffering. Unfortunately, some of its premises may not be valid. As a BookSneeze reviewer, I received Outlive Your Life for free from Thomas Nelson in exchange for my honest opinions.

    Book -Outlive Your Life

I finally finished reading this Book and I am sad to say that I was quite disappointed with this book.

Normally I can't get enough of Mr. Lucado's books, but this time I had to start and re-start reading this book over and over. Not that the topic was not interesting, but I found it hard to read as it just seemed like a few of Max's books had been combined into one single book and had a new title slapped on it.

The only part of the book that got me thinking was the story at the beginning of the book called "Finding Father Benjamin". If I were to pass away like Father Benjamin, would my friends show people the things that I had done... Would they be able to speak about where I lived and what I had done with my life.

I also did not like how Mr. Lucado took liberties in the retelling of the bible stories used to illustrate his points. It would have been nice if only one version of the bible was used and not a mish-mash of different volumes.

All in all, I can not recommend this book as it does not teach anything new, but uses the ideas from some of Mr. Lucado's books.

It seems every time you turn around, Max Lucado has written another book. He has written many books discussing the cross, becoming more like Jesus, and even how to face your giants. This time it is about making a difference. With so many things happening in our world, Max is calling out Christians to make a difference whether it is feeding the homeless or taking care of children who have been neglected. Max shares that God can use everyday people to make a difference in the world. He uses examples from scripture, in which he does use multiple translations of the Bible such as NKJV, NIV, and ESV. Sometimes I feel he tries his gift of story telling to make the scriptures come alive which is ridiculous because the word is alive (see Hebrews 4:12). He also uses stories from others who are making a difference as well some personal stories. Check out my blog, jchrisland.blogspot.com, for the entire review.
